Value of old powder cans? seals unbroken, still full
« on: April 30, 2004, 05:23:34 AM »
I've stumbled onto some old square cans of powder, Unique, Alcan AL-5, and Bullseye.  The seals haven't been broken and they are in very good condition.  They are before my time as a reloader, they are almost a cube with a metal seal on the cap, to open the cap you push in the middle and it pops open, from what I understand anyway.  Please let me know if these have any collector's value and how much it would be, they are 1 lb. tins.

Those old Hercules 8 ounce square/cube metal powder cans with the push-top lid are antiques.  They haven't been made since the early 1970's.

As for value, they are worth at least the powder contents, and to some sentimental souls, a bit more.

Generally these cans are not old enough to realise any great value, and most people don't trust old powder to reload, so they don't bring what a new can of the same would bring. I have seen these sell locally at shows for $5-$8 each.
Early powder cans from the late 1800's and early 1900's can garner huge prices, especially those with nice artwork on the labels.
