Can't get my sporster

My gun shop owner called and said he can't get a sportster. He says
none of his (4) distributors have any (including sports south).
So he gave a price on a savage. I took it. Are these guns (.17 Hmr)
that popular? I mean  I ordered It saturday and he says he has been trying to find one all week. Has anyone else had this problem?
Looks like I am the proud new owner of a savage .17 hmr.

Yes, they are that popular. I tried for some time to get a Sportster, but the distributor was always out of stock. I finally was in the right place at the right time and got a 917V at my local Wally World. It was the only one they had gotten in for a while, since Christmas time, actually. They told me that they just can't keep one in stock; they come in and go out lickety split.

Congratulations on finding one.

I must have been in the right spot on the right day.  I have the Sportster 17 HMR.  It is the most accurate rimfire rifle that I have ever owned or shot.  Mike

I had ordered one in late November last year and didn't get it until early January; the list was that long. I had looked at other rifles, but even the guy at the shop said, "I'd love to sell you a more expensive rifle, but the NEF is worth the wait!" I agree, it was. Not to knock another brand, but I love these little single-shots and never thought I would. I also have a .223 Ultra (bought it while I was waiting on the .17), and they're both tack-drivers.

I agree, I was lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time when a purchaser decided not to buy the .17 HMR Sportster that he put on lay-a-way. I snapped it up because I had been unable to find one anywhere else. It is extremely accurate. I have shot it against an Anshutz 1717D (?) with a Unertel scope. That combination cost just about 10 times what my Handi with a Simmons Whitetail 6.5-20x50 scope cost and I matched or beat the Anschitz at each distance!!! That felt GOOD!!!....<><.... :grin:

Is there a backlog on the 17HMR barrels through the barrel accessory program.  I am still planning on buying a Ultra Varmint 22WMR and having it fitted with a 17HMR barrel.  That might be a quicker way to go and one can never have too many guns in their cabinet.

In Michigan, I see the NEF17hmr's quite frequently.  I saw an Ultra 22WMR in a shop just yesterday too.  While I like the idea of exchanging barrels, the price of the Sportsters hardly make it worthwhile.  I found them for $103.  The Sportster barrels are $55-$63 depending on the caliber, plus another $20 shipping for the round trip to NEF...for another $20 you could buy the whole gun.  In fact, I purchased my Sportster in 22wmr for $103, sold the synthetic stocks on eBay for $50, and then bought a set of walnut ones from someone on the old H&R Talk forum for $20.  Let's see, $103 - $50 + $20 = $73...not a bad deal at all.

Maybe I will wait until I go to Detroit to see my family in june.Nope
I ordered my savage 93r-17 should be here on tuesday.
In the near future I will order a sportster in .22 long for my
6 year old. Then I will take the time to wait for a sportster
and do the barrel switch.I will be in Detroit (my home growing up)
in june and I have promised my nephew a new (his first) gun.
I was thinking Matched pair or maybe a sportster. We'll see which.

My son wanted a Rossi matched pair too, but I was more impressed with the NEF, so I bought him an NEF Pardner .410 and an NEF Sportster .22LR.  It was a little more money, but I'm glad that I did it now.  I got lucky and found the limited edition Pardners with the laminate stock, recoil pad, and sling swivel studs.  I went a little crazy and bought one in 20 gauge and one in 12 gauge too (they were only $95 each).  My son wasn't crazy about the "plastic" stocks on the Sportster, so I ordered a set of the camo laminate ones from NEF and it looks very cool.  He was very happy with it.  I did the same thing with my Sportster .17HMR.  Here's how they turned out:

They look great. I am not disappointed in purchasing the savage but
their is something simple and beautiful about a single shot. In the future
(when my wife gets over this purchase) I will get one. Maybe a ultra varmit for myself.

Very pretty! The more I see of those laminated stocks, the more convince I am that I've got to get a set - maybe when I send in my receiver to get a barrel or two.

Just got a .17hmr Sportster at Ky.Imports in Louisville, Ky. The owner said he had 3 left. May not be worthwhile since you will have to pay shipping and transfer fees, but thought I would mention it. Cost out the door was $149.99.

While that is nice Moonlitin, I want the laminate stocks on my 17HMR...A set of those puppies would run me $81.00 for the monte carlo stock and regular forearm.  If I buy the UV 22WMR first and then send in for the 17 barrel I would be ahead.  Plus how much work is it to remove and replace one screw anyway?
