How far do you limit your shots with a 357mag for deer?

Hey Fred,

Welcome to the forum.

I would limit myself to 50 yards or less. The 357 is accurate well beyond 50 yards but for my taste it just doesnÂ’t have enough ooompth own out there. A 357 doesnÂ’t have the margin of error for poor shot placement like a high powered rifle. I wouldnÂ’t shoot a deer any farther than I could keep a consistent 4Â” group not exceeding 50 yards or so.

I have to agree with cknight98 on this one, however with a 357 I prefer 50 yards and under. At longer ranges the shot has to be just right or I will pass. :-D

The 41 Mag and up are legitimate 100 yd deer handguns, if the shooter is up to the task.

Like Gregory said .41 on up but then with my .44 I kept running into nice deer at longer ranges so I went to a 7-08 in a Encore. Wouldn't ya know it, this years deer was at 75 yards. I also would limit the 357 to about 75-80 yards just to be on the safe side, but now were splittin hairs.

Do you reload ?
That makes a lil bit o difference :grin:
If you do then pick what ever turns your crank above the 357 mag.
I like the 45's ( 45 colt 454 cas 45-70 ) but if you dont reload good hunting ammo is expensive and / or not carried every where. Unfortunately that is the case with many other fine calbers also. So if you do not reload pic one that is easy to find ammo for and wont break your bank account.
Also remember it is not just the power of the gun but where you put the pill in the intended target along with bullet type and weight.

:cb2: If I have my scoped .44 I MIGHT try a 100 yard shot, but these old eyes just don't cooperate like they used to. Non-scoped .44 I'm still gonna try and keep them around 50 or so. I know the .44 will do better, but it's just my limitations I'm worried about.
