Author Topic: Tikka T3 or Savage 116 fsak (Read 1973 times)

I like the looks of the Tikka. but I like the muzzle break and the accu-trigger on the Savage. I will be getting one or the other soon and plan on doing a lot of target shooting. The caliber will be .30-06. I know the .30-06 is not that bad as far as recoil goes but the muzzle break may help shoot more accurately and make a long day at the range much better on the shoulder. It will also be used for deer hunting. Also I'm not to sure about the scope mount options for the T3. I would like to use the Burris signature rings to keep from scratching up my scope. Which will probably be a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40. Any opinions or suggestion would be appreciated.

The Tikka is flat out the better gun.

The Tikka-ADJUSTABLE--trigger is much better than Savage's add-on joke.

That scope will fit in the SUPPLIED Tikka rings----the Burris rings are a solution to where there is no problem-----if you feel you don't like the Tikka rings---get the Talley lightweights from Midway-------Talleys are the rings Burris wishes they could be.

No brake---but you can always add one later.

Also--the Savage action is VERY crude----just shows what a monkey and a machine can do if they set their mind to it. Actually more than crude----horrible is a better description.

I've sure never been accused of being a Savage fan. Own none and have owned mighty dang few. BUT why do you call their trigger an "add on"? It likely had more engineering R&D expended on it than any other trigger ever designed. While I think it has to be the ugliest thing ever put on a rifle from what I've heard it is likely the best factory trigger out there these days. I'll never know cuz I sure ain't buying one.

Nothing funny about the Savage trigger. It is the best out of the box you can find on a mass produced rifle. For whatever reason some people have an ax to grind against Savage. I have been very happy with my Savages exceptional accuracy. I suggest you take hands on look and shoot one if you can get a chance. They are very good shooters and best yet your money stays in the USA.

The finest trigger in the world is a Jewel trigger. (at over $200, it should be).

I have a jewel trigger on my remington 700 BDL SS DM in 7mm-08 - I just absolutely love the trigger - it is just awesome.

I say this because the ONLY factory triggers that come close are the Sako and the Tikka, and I own both.

I just have a queezy feeling about pulling the little trigger in the middle before pulling the main trigger - just doesn't feel right to me.

The Tikkas and Sakos are adjustable (self-adjustable) from 2 lbs to 4 pounds - that's a perfect range for hunting purposes.

I don't know if you have tried the accutrigger but - here is a review comparing it to 5 competitors. Only one competitor (an import) came close.

Thanks for the info. I'm leaning towards the tikka t3 but don't know which model I like best the t3 lite stainless, the laminated stainless or the varmint stainless. If I get the varmint I'll have to settle for the .308 but thats no big deal to me it's a great caliber but I like the 06 a little more. These tikkas sure are hard to find. I went to three different gun shops yesterday and they all told me they don't deal with them because Tikka/berretta require them to carry a huge amount of inventory. They won't just send them a gun or two. The local Wal-mart can get them but only the t3 lite blue version. The local Dick's sporting goods told me all they can get is the older whitetail hunter models no t3's.

Marylandeer, What these dealers are saying does not sound quite right. I have bought several Sako rifles from a local gun shop. He is a Sako/Beretta dealer and he does not have a big inventory. In fact he usually gets only about 2-3 at a time. He also sells Remington, Winchester, Tikka, Weatherby and a few others. I dont understand how Beretta could have a different deal for their Tikka rifles.

I bought a 300WSM from ozark guns, but, believe it or not, I haven't had the time to pick it up from my FFL guy. It's been sitting there for over 5 weeks! Come to think of it, I'm gonna place a call to try and pick it up. :grin:

As a follow up to my post, Walmart is unable to deliever on my order for a t3 lite stainless in 7 mag. They had absolutly no idea when it would come in. I had it on order there for 5 weeks. They said it may take up to 4 months to get my rifle. Order canceled. I've got a local gun shop looking for one now altho their price is a bit higher it's worth it if they can deliver. They have several tikka's in stock including the 30-06 in stainless btw. If they are unable to find one in 7 mag i guess I'll have to settle for either a 300wsm or 300win mag both of which they have on hand. I am a little concerned about the recoil in such a light rifle in a 300 mag tho. I do already have a limbsaver recoil pad ready to swap with the factory one. I dunno

The muzzle brake will NOT help with accuracy. They just reduce recoil and INCREASE the muzzle blast. There is NO such thing as a "QUIET" muzzle brake. They just redirect the sound away from the shooter which means someone else is going to get the full blast of sound.

As far as the Savage rifle goes GET ONE and you won't be sorry. At this point in time they are the most accurate out of the box factory rifle going today. The AccuTrigger is strange to look at and maybe feels a little strange but it sure works. It is no wonder it is the talk of the gun world at present. I have fired a number of them and just got my own Savage that has the AccuTrigger and cant wait to get to the range to put it thru the wringer. Also of note the new Savage action is really very smooth. As far as being crude, it is definitely NOT CRUDE. Some may not like their looks but Savage is a quality made firearm. Small Groups and tight lines to you. Lawdog

I have not ordered anything yet. Still undecided on which one I want and can't seem to kind any Tikkas available anyway. Wal-Mart is having trouble getting them, none of my local dealers will get me one. Ozark is sold out the models that I like (Varmint .308, Laminated .30-06). I 'm waiting for a reply back from Eastcounty guns, we'll see what they have. On the other hand everybody and their brother has the Savage rifles. Thanks for the replies. I appreciate it.

I don't know, I have never had a rifle with one. I realize it would not make a difference while hunting but at the range it way help get those small groups.

I took a good look at some Savage rifles yesterday as well as the T-3. To me it was 6 of one and 1/2 doz of the other as far as looks. I liked the bolt much better on the Tikka and as far as the trigger I prefered the Tikka as well. But of course, as with most responses on these forums, this is only opinion not real proof of superiority. I really doubt that Savages are more accurate out of the box than Tikka, Cz or Howa. And I have not seen anyone come out with any real test to prove it. Why are Tikka rifles so hard to get? Probably several reasons. But like most rifles that are touted on the web sites . . . the pendulm swings from one rifle brand to another as time goes on. Today's hero is tomorrows old news. What was really interesting was that this Gander Mountain store had quite a few Weatherby blems for sale in the 600.00 range. Mostly in 7M-08. And finally when I asked the gun clerk what brand they sell the most of . . . it was Remington. Gee, maybe I should buy one :eek:

No I don't agree. Flinching is the thief of accuracy and the main reason people flinch is noise. Thus the more noise you have the more likely the person will flinch. Muzzle breaks INCREASE the noise level, PERIOD. The recoil of a 8 1/2 - 9 lb. .30-06 is not enough that it can not be handled with a well designed stock and a good recoil pad. The trick to handling recoil is practice and working up to handling the caliber/rifle of your choice. When shooting any caliber and you find the recoil is starting to get to you stop shooting that rifle and switch to another caliber of lesser recoil. Dont shoot until your shoulder is sore or your are flinching. Quit for a while. Basically it boils down to just getting used to a cartridge. Small groups and tight lines to you. Lawdog

You do have a good point, I never thought of it like that. I was thinking with ear plugs and / or muffs it would be fine but your rite more noise = more noise. Makes sense. Thanks

I know Savage makes good guns. I own two of them, a model 110 in .270 that is OLD but still works perfectly. It shoots good, it used to shoot GREAT but not as good anymore. The other is a model 10 fm ultra light pre accu trigger it shoots about 1.5" groups at 100 yards. I'm sure it would do much better with a high quality scope. She wears a very cheap scope rite now.

marylandeer, I'll ask the shop where i found my 7 magif they'd be willing to ship a tikka out. They have one perhaps two in 30-06. East county guns prolly has one as well. Seems they have finally responded to emails today. Took them one day too many as i ordered my tikka yesterday, shop says i should have it in a week. ECG said they have one in stock but their price is a bit more for me since I have to pay sales tax. Good luck in the tikka search.
