Kennel barking terriers
« on: April 20, 2004, 03:57:21 AM »
I am getting two rat terriers from my sister (breeder). These dogs have been kept in a kennel. I am interessted in possibly making them inside dogs, but both seem to bark more than i would want in a house dog. I first thought that they were barking just because i would pull into my sisters place and i wasnt one of "their" people. But even after my sister and i have entered the house and are conversing, they just bark and bark. When she yells at them to quiet they do, but only for a while. My question is, With these dogs being over a year old and used to the kennel, am i going to be able to break them of their barking habits? I dont mind warning barks when someone arrives or even when the mailman goes by, but if it is incessant, i wont have it. Kenneled or not, the barking has to be toned down.  Any suggestions please post a reply or email me. Thanks

I have had dogs that barked in thier kennels like that and would stop when you let them out. if you are going to crate train them, I don't know if it would work since they have been accustomed to messing in their kennels. The only way I see that working is if it is a very small crate.

Then... they are going to bark in their crate probably... What does everyone else think?

Hi
I have a Jack Rrussell that loves to bark...I bought a ccitronella collar for him... Any time it is on he is not barking. It was around $70 at the local pet shop.  A possible side effect may be no mosquitos??? Here in SoCal we don't get many to start with, so cannot test that idea.
Good luck

My daughter has 3 unruly ,untrained, terrier cross dogs. They barked incessantly, and annoyed the neighbors. 2 weeks ago she bought a small battery powered sonic device, that emits a sound I can't hear but the dogs shut up immediately. It seems to allow the dog to bark 3-4 times, but after that it activates and the dog stops. I tried it on my jack russel, it really worked slick.
If you are bringing kennel dogs into the house, I would also recommend the travel kennels. It provides a safe quiet area for the dog and sure saves on the carpets.

Huntinbull,

Will the terriers be 'kennel dogs' or IN THE HOUSE at your place?
