Irish Webley ?
« on: April 17, 2004, 03:53:25 PM »
I just returned from the Syracuse N.Y. Gun show. I bought a nice webley from a dealer, I've never heard of this version before but i'm no expert. The upper half of the revolver is a Mk. 5 and the lower half is a Mk. 6 . I thought it was cobbed together but the dealer said it was put together in 1944 at a castle in Irland wher the Britts. were afraid Germany would invade. They were put together to arm the home guard. He said it's a scarce verient and it's listed in Skinnerton's book on the Webley. Anyone know anything about these?

rk3006:  I would either get a copy of Skinnerton's book or go and try and look it up in a library that may have one to verify what that dealer said.  There should be some markings on the revolver to help identify it as such.

I may be wrong but in my younger days before the GCA of 68, when Webleys were in plentiful supply and I had a Mk6, I thought you could replace the entire top half of the revolver (cylinder nad barrel, etc) with another one with little difficulty, hence being able to make up a Mk5 from a Mk6 and vice versa.  I know this may not be very much help but I figured I would try just the same.  Mikey.

I have the same thing, I was told the same story by a collector friend who died a few years back. He said the germans were knocking the heck out of english factories. Seems like the parts were in short supply so they just made what they could so they could to keep things going. Sorry I couldn't help more.
