.375 Win - best bullets/loads ?
« on: April 16, 2004, 03:45:30 AM »
I now have two 14" barrels so I've got some accuracy work ahead...

What bullet do you recommend for the Contender in a 14" barrel, an d does anyone have a favorite load for deer with phenominal 100-yard accuracy?

c'mon, fess up!

I have a 10" Bullberry and it just loves 34.5 of RL 7 and 220 Gr Hornady's
This in not a max load and is very comfortable for me to shoot.
I have seen this  load in lthe manuals and  by  lurking around the different forums and it is a very popular load +/- a bit. It will shoot  MOA if I do my part.

For deer the 200 Sierra is a bit softer than the 220 Hornady and the extra velocity helps expansion.  While RL-7 works well, I prefer AA1680, particularly in short barrels.  Expect well over 2100 fps with a max load of this powder, and with less recoil than the 220 Hornadys; 33 grains gives the 200s around 1800 fps and mild recoil.

I've used the 220s in my M1894 rifle with good results on deer, but IMO the Sierras are better for deer in a handgun.  For larger game the 220s would be superior.

I have always used the 220 Hornadys with good success.  I would like to try the 200 gr speer.  I have been using AA2015 38gr for 1900 out of my Mag-na-ported 12" bbl.  My friend is now using 1680 and likes it better and I am going to try that next.  44 Man

Mine liks 31 gr. of IMR 4198 and the Hornady 220's.  It is an easy shooting load that will shoot 1 1/2" 5 shot groups at 100 yds with my 2x scope.  Do not know how it works on deer, none walked by last year on the days I carried it.
