What's your groups size (per maker)

I've always thought that if you don't validate theory, and eliminate differences in exactly what a "tack driver" is that you really are speculating.

Given that maybe it's a good idea to post some real results and try to classify what you get out of your rifles today.

I've got the following, with the respective groups. Now I'm listing the BEST group's I've reached.  I'm interested in actual groups sizes comparisions (and age of the rifle if not fairly new).
All of these are 4 shot groups at 100 yds unless specified.

Abolt 300WSM hunter = .39" group w/180gr triple shocks.
Browning BLR 81 in 358 Win = .7" groups at 50 yards.
NEF pardner rifle in 223 bull barrel = .39" group
Old Remy 700 bull barrel, jewel triger = .59" groups all day.

I take a good amount of time building these loads so they aren't typical of what I expect to see.  It would be interesting to see real numbers on savage, sako, and tikka along with some new remy's

I really don't think one single best group means much of anything. I've shot several groups in the .2's and even .1's with just about all of my centerfire rifles (except for my model 1891 7.65mm mauser). But I consider these to be flukes. On average with my best handloads my Sakos are capable of consistently shooting 1/2 to 1" groups. Since I'm not in the target shooting business, however, I'm very satisfied if I got a gun that'll shoot 1" or less and if it only did 2" I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with it.

Interesting that your best group with the 300 WSM is with the Triple Shock. I've been using that bullet myself and so far I am very pleased with it. It's as accurate as just about any hunting bullet I've ever used.

Three shot groups, off the bench. Scopes sighted 2" high at 100 yds.  Dead-on at lesser yardage.  Peeps are dead-on.

.308 Model 70 Featherweight - (100 yds, Scoped) Covered with a dime, consistently.

.30-06 Marlin Mr-7 - (100 yds, Scoped) Covered with a dime, consistently.

.30-06 Remington Model 700 Syn. & Black Finish - (100 yds, Peep Sights) Covered with a quarter, consistently.

.243 Remington Model 700 - (100 yds, Scoped)  Almost covered with a Quarter.  Sometimes a flyer.

.22 Hornet Savage Model 340-D - (75 yds, Scoped) Covered with a dime, consistently.

.35 Rem Marlin Model 336 - (75 yds, Scoped) Covered with a quarter, consistently.

.22 Marlin 25 - (50 yds, Scoped)  covered with a dime, consistently.

The .22, .22Hornet, .35 Rem, and Model 700 .30-06 are natural shooters.  The Winchester and Marlin were worked on to perform.  The .243 is a new acquisition and needs a little work.

Would you like to get rid of that inaccurate thing.  I could be talked into taking it off your hands if you would like(depending on it' condition).

Spot,

As far as accuracy goes for all my bolt actions I go by their average group size not the smallest group I ever shot with them.  Every Weatherby Mark V Deluxe I own shoots under MOA  All of my other rifles(Mausers, Remingtons, Rugers, Sakos, Winchesters, etc.) shoot at(1 1/2 inches or better) to under MOA or they don’t stay around very long.  Lawdog

Sorry Lawdog, I just can't part with that 1891 Mauser. This gun belonged to my grandfather and has a lot of sentimental value to me. It would probably be the last gun I'd part with out of the ones I currently own. It's all original and in quite good condition.

Because it's not scoped (I don't want to alter it by putting a scope on it), it's not the equal of my other rifles in the accuracy dept., but it holds its own pretty well. At 50 yards I can usually put 5 shots in an inch or an inch and a half. I reload for it using the .311"  150 gr. Hornady spire pt. along with 47grs. of IMR 4350. This load is pretty tame, but it works okay.

BTW, I've got a deer at the taxidermist right now that was put to rest last season by that rifle. It still gets the job done.

None of the groups I posted are "best groups" - they are what I can do on an average day at the range.  If I can't shoot that group at least 7 out of 10 times or dang close to it in size then I wouldn't quote it.

I've had a few "holes in one" but nothing consistant.  Maybe I should have specified the average group size you can stay at, or within.

I've got a personal pref for three quarter of an inch as my time to move on limit.  That is for a bolt gun.

I just wish we could get better imperical data on what people shoot.

Spot,

"Tack Drivers" should be capable of consistently hitting tacks at 100 yards!
