malfunctioning rem mod 7
« on: April 15, 2004, 11:27:36 AM »
Just been on a hunting trip using a remington model 7 ss synth 7mm 08, using standard PMC factory ammo. Problem I have had is that twice I have fired at animals and nothing has happened (no obvoious audible clicks). I removed the bullet from the action and it had a very slight dimple on the end of the primer. This rifle is nearly new, After the first incidence I fired a couple of test rounds and it was fine. The dimpled ammo seems fine, primers are not overly recessed or anything. I have tried to fire the rifle with the safety on and as expected this leaves no mark on the primer (I'm sure I had the safety off anyhow). The rifle also fires if the safety is off and the bolt is not 100% closed. So I don't think it occurred because the bolt wasn't fully locked down. Can anyone throw any light on this problem??

Cheers

You may want to check the Remington website.  They had a recall on the Model 710 in the past, although I don't remember what for.

It can only be a couple of things.  First disassemble the bolt/striker assembly.  It is just possible theres something in the works, but it is unlikely.  The most likely hypothesis is the bolt handle was raised at the time you attempted to fire and the cockong piece struck the cocking cam.  This dissapates so much energy the primer is not struck sufficiently hard as to detonate.  Is the rifles accuracy ok, have there been any other problems with the weapon...  I would bet money on the raised bolt handle scenario.

Lurcher,

Take the rifle out of the stock. Get yourself a can of brake pad cleaner or carburetor cleaner. Thoroughly clean out the trigger/safety mechanism with this cleaner. I've had a 700 fire when I had the safety on, pulled the trigger and then took the safety off. If these parts get gummed up you get this problem. After such a cleaning I have not had this problem reoccur.

Also, you may want to strip the bolt and clean it thoroughly. Leave it dry or just lubricate very lightly.
