Confused about this Blackhawk
« on: April 10, 2004, 01:52:25 PM »
Went into an out of the way gun shop taday and laying there for sale was an Old Model 41 Mag Blackhawk with a 4 5/8" barrel.  This thing was like new, it was hard to even see the mark around the cylinder from the lock pin (or whatever it is called).  Not a scratch on it.  The more I looked at it though, I noticed that it had a transfer bar.  I assume the previous owner had Ruger do their free conversion.  There was also a little pin behind the trigger that pushed in when the trigger was pulled.  I assume that this works the transfer bar and operates like this because it was an old model that had been converted (I have never seen an Old Model that has been converted).  I did have trouble figuring out how the thing worked since I have never messed with an old model, I did not know there was a halfcock and it needed to be there to rotate the cylinder.

Anyway, I did not buy it.  Price was $320 which I thought was too high since it had the conversion done to it and new ones are only about $340.  I am not into the old Rugers that much, I know the old models are worth a bunch but I assume that value declines if it has been converted.  Is that true?

I have been thinking about getting another 41 Blackhawk, so this one sure got my attention.

thats the trigger return spring and is on all old models. If the gun is as nice as you say its a bargin at that price even though its converted. Pretty easy to convert back. If i were you id jump on it.

IF you have the parts. Unless it has the origional parts with it it will be almost impossible to convert it back due to the complete lack of action parts to do so. An ols model hammer alone can sell for $100 due to its rareness.  So if all the old parts are there its worth it but if the old parts are missing its only worth what a used new model is worth.

Yea, I agree with Smitty. The old parts are nearly impossible for converting back and then they may have to be fitted. It's not apealing as a new "Three Screw" and a little high priced for a nice shooter in 41 mag.

I have seen Old Model parts on Ebay occasionally, and almost bought some the other day just because they were there.  I think Iwill when I see them in the future just to have them to use or sell to needy Ruger owners.

Flint is right as I saw a whole set of 3 screw parts on ebay also.  I hate to give ebay any business since they refuse to take firearms anymore.  But that is just me.....................Mike
