What sights for pig hunting?
« on: April 09, 2004, 08:13:49 PM »
I'd like to use my 44 mag. Anaconda for a bit of pig hunting but I'm uncertain what sights are best.  In a fast breaking situation (i.e., boar attack!) I'd think that open sights might be better but for general pig hunting maybe some sort of red dot sight may be superior.  I'd like to get some feedback on this issue, thanks in advance.

First off to easy your mind true attacks are rare not to say it doesn't happen but rare. Mostly if you are chasing them with dogs. On the guns that I hunt pigs with I have 2x scopes, one red dot and ever one
holo-sight. All work very well at the short ranges I choose to shoot pigs. The scopes do seem to gather the light better than the red sights but boy that red sure stands out on the hide of a dark colored pig backed up under heavy cover.  If you have old eyes like I do and really have to use glass I would go with a quality 2x scope for close in work and a 4x if you plan on shooting out to 100 yards.
Love those .41s'

One of my handguns has a 2x leupy but I really prefer a nice crisp partridge front blade and a good deep square notch blade in the back with serrations, no white lines. Partridge sites are hard on a good leather holster but if you take a lil extra care when drawing the firearm it’s not that bad. With some practice of shooting at targets in low light conditions with open sights it’s not hard to get a feel for how to shoot them. The only real advantage for me of using scopes or dots is that it makes the gun much easier to shoot accurately.

Be safe,
Scott

my wild Pigs and my wild sheep(you can see one pig head and the sheep on my wall full shoulder mounts. I just kept the tail from my second pig. both tasted pretty good through
I used a Tasco red dot on both pigs(and the sheep) with 11 grains of Unique and a  250 Gr. SWC hard cast bullet in a Ruger Blackhawk slightly customized in 45 long colt caliber. These days I would use with a 41 or 44 magnum Ruger or a Contender, that is if I can ever can hunt again.

I have to go along with Scott  for the most part. I have not gone the dog route as of yet- Just us and the hogs      I do not want any scopes, red dots etc. that close up. Fiber optic sights from SDM now ride on my 500, but the rest do or will hold P/gold bead combo. We like the gold beads from SDM, and just will not use  anything else. Just another thought.  :)

Scott's right.  If you are moving much or chasing dogs, that pistol needs to be in a good, secure holster, not in you hand.  Scopes and dots don't mix with holsters very well, even bandoliers.  For any type of quick action, hip holsters are still King.

TUSKER:

Who is SDM? I have been wanting a gold bead front sight with a V notch rear. Do they do this, too?

I got it How about the V notch rear gold bead front and a set of crimson trace lazor grips for the really quick shots put the dot on the pig and shoot. If I remember correctly they are now making these grips for the Ruger blackhawks. sounds like a viable solution to me especually for quick shooting.

Check state laws before going with a lazor for hunting. In MN a lazsor sight is not legal for hunting. This is due to a law written years ago to help curtail the use of lights at night to take dear.
