158g XTP performance (recovered from deer pictures)
« on: April 07, 2004, 09:20:13 AM »
I posted this on another forum, but with the recent discussion of the XTP bullets, I thought you guys might be interested in these pictures too.

These are four recovered 158g XTP-FPs taken from four deer. These were fired from a Marlin 1894C, with a muzzle velocity of 1700fps. These deer were shot at various ranges(can't remember the details exactly), but all were under 100 yards. Most times the 158g XTP-FPs exit on deer, so I was lucky to get these for studying.

This is a 158g XTP-HP recovered from another deer. This one was fired from my Blackhawk, and the velocity was around 1350 fps.

Here's the same bullet flipped over...

Looks like they performed as designed.

looks like they did their job well. been wondering how the 158 and 180 XTP's would perform on deer. no more need to wonder.

I have some recovered .44 and .45 300 gr. XTPs fired from handguns at around 1250 that look exactly like those.  Excellent bullets.

Hornady is one of the sponsors of this site, and I've used them for a few years now.    It seems to me that Hornady does their homework as well as anybody in the bullet business, possibly to include the most expensive of the custom bullet manufacturers.     I'll take a Hornady almost every time....

looks perfect to me. if there is adequate penetration (which I expect there is) this looks to be  a great deer round.
Cheers,
