Thanks Guys - Picked up my Single Six 22 Combo Tonight!
« on: April 06, 2004, 06:48:36 PM »
Thanks for all the input guys!  Tonight I picked up my Single Six 22 combo in stainless in 5.5".  I can't wait to get to the range.

I had a hell of a time last week.  Went to a local dealer, filled out all the paperwork, then the PA check system was down.  I waited there for a while shopping for other things, and generally wasting time (for 1:15), still down, so I went home.  The place was to call me at work the following day before lunch if the approval code came through so I could stop out during my lunch hour.  No call at work, but they did call me at home and left a message.  Hmmm, wonder how they thought I would get that while I was working?  So, the following day I go after work.  I called them to let them know I was coming, to finalize the paperwork.  When I got there, they had not done anything yet.  They called for my insta-check ... you guessed it, the system was down AGAIN!.  I waited a little, decided to go nearby for dinner, took my time, called them after dinner, still down!

Very frustrated, I told them I was not sure I was going back - a little out of my way.  Based on the below information, I said, why don't you guys come up with a reason why I would want to come back .... thinking, heck at least throw in a pack of targets, a little discount, a brick of 22 ammo, something.  The guy laughed at me and says ... "well it's a Ruger, it's a really nice shooting gun" ...  Arrogant (censored word)!  I think I'll order my new $2000.00 safe from WV even though they are the local dealer!

Reason:  I had just bought a H&R Ultra Slugger from them a couple weeks before.  They did not have the scope I wanted, so I took it home without.  I picked one up online at a good price.  I called the dealer from work one day asking if they had the scope rings they would need to clear the hammer, if they did, I would run it out on my lunch hour ... they said no problem, they never run out of those.  So (during my busy schedule) I trek out there at lunch with the Ultra.  I get to the counter, and the guy I spoke to on the phone looked, you guessed it no scope rings!!!  I wanted to take that heavy barrel and club him over the head with it.  He tells me, don't worry, they will make it up to me when I come back to pick it up.  If paying for my scope rings (free mount came with purchase) was making it up to me, I was a little disappointed.  I had 3 wasted trips out there, around 30 miles one way.  Oh, I also bought a NEF Pardner 10 gauge from them within the past few weeks to boot!

So, I discovered a local firearms broker along my normal travel path.  He had a Ruger Single Six 5.5" Stainless, and for 30 bucks cheaper than the other place.  So I snapped that up tonight.

Can't wait to get the Ultra and the Single Six to the range.  After all that, my trigger finger is getting itchy  :-D  :biggun:

Thanks again for all the comments ... :D

Hi PASlugger :D ,
Sorry to here about all your trouble. I would hope that in the US things would be somewhat easier than here in Canada  . I wish there was less hassle everywhere with firearms, but I guess we all do. :x
I recently purchased a used 6 1/2" ruger in blue 8) . After reading your story it makes me even more anxious to get it, should be here in the next couple of days  . Then I will be looking to go to the range too. Can't wait.
Anyways good luck with your purchase hope it shoots well, oh and since you live in the US shoot a rabbit or something for me :-) ....since here all we can do legally is punch paper. Congrats

Congrats on your new baby, I know it's hard, but try not to dry-fire that little beauty until you know it won't do any damage.  Some 22's have firing pins just long enough to impact the cylinder with no shell in place.  This will often raise a burr around the chamber, leading to problems loading and ejecting.  It can also peen the front of the firing pin, which can also result in inconsistent ignition.  But if you can tell the pin is short enough not to impact anything, click away, it will help smooth out the action over time.

You mentioned getting a convertible, don't ignore the 22 Mag cylinder.  I have found that the magnum version often outshoots the 22LR, sometimes by a significant amount.  The 22LR is usually a little undersized for the .224 bore, but the 22 Mag is a good fit.  An old convertible Colt single-action I had years ago (and miss dearly) would put five shots into about a half-inch off a good benchrest, and was instant death on any small game I connected with.  The shells are kind of pricey compared to the regular 22's, but they can be a lot of fun, too!

In any event, get a good holster, try every kind of ammo you can get your hands on, and have fun with that little blaster.  Reloading it can be a bit tedious, but you'll get real good at it, real fast!

Slugger,  I too am sorry to here of your troubles with a shop.  I've been there myself and I make sure I exhaust all other avenues before I ever go back to shops that treat me as just another number.  There are still shops and dealers out there that go out of their way for you and I go out of my way to give them my business.  You'll love your Single Six I'm sure.  They are alot of bang for the buck......................Mike

I bought a 6.5 inch version a couple of weeks ago.  No insta check but was ok'd by that night so I picked it up before work. Mine is neither stainless or brand new but it had only been shot maybe a hundred times with 22 mag ammo.  On my pistol the mainspring was so long that it was in a bind when fully cocked giving a 6 pound trigger pull.  after a good cleaning and a bit of spring work it is a fine shooting gun.  I still can't think of any reason for the 22 mag cylinder though.

Rick,

Is that true about the .22 mag. for the single-six? I'm getting ready to pick up single six combo this weekend.  I thought the .22 mag's would be fun to shoot, if not let me know.. If that is true, I could upgrade to a SS single-six...

Thanks,

Jim

Was right on went he said the mag outshoots the Lr by considerable.

Reason for this is that the Lr sheds much more velocity when shot out of a handgun as compared to a rifle.
The Mag loses much less.
Dont remember the exact numbers, but it is a ballistic's thing.

The Lr is still great for plinking, hunting squirrels & such.

The 22 mag just won't do anything I need done that the 22 lr can't do just fine.. The 22 mag is an ear piercing round out of a pistol too along with being too destructive on small game.

Picked up a blue 6 1'2" single-six today at a gun show........What brand of ammo do you use? Especially for the MAGS. I shoot nothing but CCI Mini Mags in my 22/45, should I stay with CCI?

Thanks,

Jim
