Looking for a short action 700 to re-barrel or a Savage 110
« on: April 03, 2004, 02:18:45 AM »
I am going to build a light wight 358 bolt action rifle on a budget, and am looking for a Remington 700 ADL. Any caliber on the .308 case will work, I would like to find a gun with a barrel that isn't perfect. I plan to sent it to ER Shaw for a new tube.
The other possibility would be an early Savage 110, with walnut stock. They are all long action so a 30-06 would be OK. I bought one last week in 270, but my left handed son and wife have claimed it. I would be going with an Adams & Bennett barrel for this one. Shotgunner

I read Brownells will sell you a action @ $400 +.  Better off buying a new ADL.

I agree, $400 doesn't sound cheap to me. Buy a used rifle. The Savage actions are easy to rebarrel and shouldn't cost as much to g'smith.

The savage is a great rifle if your going to keep it for ever & ever.  However, their hard to sell or trade.

I bought an early 110 light weight, left hand in 270 for $180 last week. If I could find another that was right handed I would take it. I don't think you can do anything but loose money building custom rifles and then selling them. The only thing I want is an early one with a decient walnut stock. I am hopeing to build this 358 for less than what it would cost for a Savage 99 or other original, like a Ruger 77 or Winchester 88.  As long as it works and I don't have too much money tied up in it I will keep it and hunt with it. Shot.
