DW in .45 Colt
« on: April 02, 2004, 07:25:30 AM »
Hello to all,.... I'm looking to start using a handgun for deer hunting & have heard good things about DW's. Since I already load for .45 Colt & know its wide potential I'm leaning to this caliber. I'd appreciate any feedback from you guys about this combo. What model or models should I be looking at? I've read here that DW's are strong, but in this chambering, is there enough meat between the chamber walls & the bolt-cuts to allow really stout loads to be run thru the firearm? Maybe the bolt-cuts have been positioned between the chambers in the cylinder, to fix a p
ossible weak contition? I appreciate your input. jd45. PS...thinking about an 8" bbl.

While we're on the subject,I'd like to know the chamber dimensions and groove diametr for the 45 Colt in a DW.  Are the chambers the traditional oversized ones, or are they modernized and tighter?

My M45 is over 12 years old, but it has minimum chambers unlike my Ruger in this chambering.   It is very strong, although I have not hotrodded it above the typical Ruger/TC load data.  I used it for silhouettes for years, firing a 300 LBT at 1080 fps ( just subsonic for wind drift minimization ).  Very accurate and recoil is light - not surprising with a 4# weight. Mine has the 8" barrel, a bit long for hunting but I have used it, firing a 300XTP into a Kodiak deer - one shot, one deer - but no surpise there with a proven cartridge.
