How Familiar Are You with Athlon Optics?

Athlon Sport Optics

If you are reading this we assume that you are somewhat familiar with, and most certainly have at least heard of, Athlon Optics. We thought we'd take a moment to give a little intel on the brand.

Athlon Sport Optics stands out in a crowded market primarily because they aggressively maximize value per dollar and back their products with one of the most reliable warranties in the industry. Here is exactly why they are a top choice for shooters and hunters:
Feature-Rich for the Price Point - Athlon builds optics that "punch above their weight class." Instead of saving premium features exclusively for multi-thousand-dollar options, they build high-end specs into mid-tier budgets.
Premium Glass & Coatings: Many of their lines, like the Midas G2 and Cronus G2, feature UHD/ED extra-low dispersion glass and ESP Dielectric Coatings that reflect over 99% of light. This translates to exceptional edge-to-edge clarity and brightness, particularly during the critical first and last minutes of legal light.
Mechanical Precision: Their precision riflescopes are heavily favored by PRS/long-range shooters because they use high-precision erector systems, stainless steel/brass internals, and robust zero-stops that track perfectly and consistently hold zero under heavy recoil.
Rugged Engineering: Across their binoculars and spotting scopes, they heavily utilize lightweight but incredibly tough magnesium alloy chassis paired with protective rubber armoring and argon purging for permanent waterproof and fog-proof performance.

Athlon Optics has carved out a massive chunk of the market by offering high-end features at prices that make legacy brands look overpriced.
Hard-to-Beat Value Proposition - Athlon's core strength is putting premium features into budget and mid-tier price points. Even on their entry-to-mid-level lines (like the Argos and Helos), you consistently get:
First Focal Plane (FFP): True sub-tensions at any magnification.
Glass-Etched, Illuminated Reticles: Features usually reserved for much more expensive glass.
Solid Zero-Stops and Precision Turrets: Precise, repeatable adjustments that hold zero under heavy recoil.
Excellent Tracking and Reliability: - While many budget-to-mid-tier optics struggle with consistent tracking, Athlon has built a reputation for turrets that actually track true. Shooters looking at other brand options often find that Athlon offers more tactile adjustments and fewer issues with zero shift over time.
Clear Glass Quality and Diverse Manufacturing - Athlon sources and tiers its optics intelligently to match your budget: - Entry to Mid-Tier (Talos, Argos, Helos, Ares): High-performing, clear Chinese/Philippine glass with robust coatings that hold up remarkably well compared to competitors in the sub-$500 and sub-$1,000 brackets.
Flagship Cronus BTR Gen 2 Riflescopes: Built in Japan by Light Optical Works (LOW)?the same legendary facility that produces top-tier glass for much more expensive brands. You get true UHD performance, exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness, and flawless low-light performance at a fraction of the cost of other Japanese or European flagships

Recommended Athlon Optics by Category - If you are looking to dive into the brand, these are their standout performers across different categories:
Spotting Scopes - Athlon Ares G2 UHD Spotting Scopes - The Athlon Ares G2 Spotting Scope features an Apochromatic lens system and UHD glass, providing the high-contrast clarity needed to spot distant impacts or game without the premium price of high-end European glass.
Athlon Optics Argos HD Spotting Scopes - The Athlon Optics Argos HD Spotting Scope balances value and performance with an 85mm aperture and advanced fully multi-coated lenses, built into a rugged, rubber-armored composite chassis.
Binoculars - Athlon Optics Midas G2 Binoculars - The Athlon Optics Midas G2  Binoculars offer phenomenal low-light performance, crisp true-color fidelity, and generous eye relief in a highly durable, lightweight magnesium chassis.
Athlon Optics Cronus G2 UHD 10x42 Binocular - The Athlon Cronus G2 UHD 10x42 Binoculars leverage an edge-to-edge sharpness lens system and Japanese ED glass to provide serious glassers a completely flat, ultra-bright field of view.

A Truly Unconditional Lifetime Warranty - An optic is only as good as the company standing behind it. Athlon's Gold Medal Lifetime Warranty is a massive selling point: No Receipt, No Registration: It is a fully transferable, lifetime warranty. If an optic gets damaged during normal use, they will repair or replace it?even if you bought it used or don't have the paperwork. (Note: Only their thermal optics require registration and carry a separate 5-year warranty).
Hassle-Free Replacement: Field reviews consistently highlight that if an optic fails mechanically or suffers a major accident, Athlon's turnaround time is lightning-fast (often under two weeks), and they frequently ship out a brand-new replacement scope rather than making you wait for a lengthy repair.
One major caveat to keep in mind: Their warranty will be voided if you alter the body with DIY spray paint, Duracoat, or hydro-dipping.

If you are shopping for a specific application?such as a long-range precision rimfire build, a sub-100 yard brush gun, or a high-magnification setup for a tripod?let me know your specific gear requirements and I can narrow down the exact Athlon model that fits the bill.

Got a couple I bought from you. VERY disappointed in them. Will sure never buy another. The one I put on my .257 Weatherby, the power adjust ring is pretty much impossible to change power so effectively I have a single power scope. I sure can't recommend them to anyone.

I mounted both of them but have never taken them out to sight them in. Worst money I ever spent on an optic.

Doug, I finally called Athlon today and told them of the problem. They were VERY reluctant to sent me a shipping label to get it to them. I think mentioning your name is what tipped the scales in my favor. I now have a shipping label to return it via UPS to them for repair/replacement.

I honestly had made up my mind I'd not pay to return it and would have just junked it had they not come around to pay to have it returned. I have the Leupold 3-9 back on the rifle, it's the scope it wore for years until I decided to try the Athlon.

So I can say Athlon is taking proper care of me on this optic. Thanks Doug.

I now have the scope back from Athlon. They DID NOT replace it. They really also DID NOT really repair it. They put some oil on the outside of the scope near the adjustment ring and called it good. To be fair it is slightly improved but still of the 50+ scopes I own it is still the most difficult to turn the power adjustment ring. I can do it with scope off and in my hand but am less certain I can do so on a rifle.

Here is what the supposed technician wrote on the work order:

Quote
Upon inspection I noticed that the magnification ring was stiffer usual. I was able to put some lubricant by the magnification ring and was able to get the power adjustment right moving a lot smoother than it was before.

I totally disagree that the ring movement is a lot smoother, some smoother yes, a lot NO.

For about ten years my job daily was to repair/rebuild binoculars, scopes and other optical instruments for the US Army. I have vast experience both in using and working on scopes, binoculars and other optical instruments.

I know when something is working right and when it isn't. Putting oil on the outside of a scope is NOT a fix for the problem this scope has. Is it now usable? Yeah somewhat but with my old arthritic hands/fingers it is not very usable. If I were still a young man I'd use it. I'm not a young man tho and I WILL NOT USE THIS SCOPE.

So far as I'm concerned it's just a cheap piece of Chinese crap and they company does not honor the warranty. Claiming you offer a life time warranty is one thing, actually honoring it and doing the right thing is quite another.

Each person can do as they please but my advice is to never ever buy anything with the Athlon brand name on it unless you want to gamble you get a good one. I did not get a good one on this one.

I've put it on a shelf and likely will one day toss it in the trash and just take the loss on it. I'd love to sell it and get some money back but no way i'd foist such a POS on a GBO member or anyone for that matter.

It is a sample of one so some might be fine. But the customer service is almost certainly representative of the way the company does business.

Come to think of it this thing is as heavy as a hammer, I might use it for that. >:(
