I have two in 7mm08 so you will enjoy it. On my ss it has a very tight chamber. If you reload you may run into some minor problems or the gun may have to be adjusted.

I have three (3) Remington M-7's!
Chamberings are: 7mm-08 Remington, 308 Winchester & 223 Remington!

The 7mm-08 has been my primary deer rifle since 1989.
The 308 is my wifes deer rifle.
The 223 is my "hurry-out-the-back-door" coyote (and sometimes deer) rifle!

I can't say anything bad about any of them, and I'm sure you'll enjoy your 260!

I have a 7mm-08 that has accounted for many deer, and a .222 that gets picked as a walking woodchuck gun. I love these two guns!

7mm08s are hard to find sometimes to. 308s you can always find.

For what it would cost to rebarrel you can load several hundred rounds of 260 ammo and never worry about running out. I had a 260 Encore barrel at one time, I think you'll love the caliber. You can always neck down 308 brass or neck up 243 brass so brass availability is never a problem.

I've had a Model 7 since 1989 in 7mm-08. Best deer rifle I've ever had, bar none. I have the 18-1/2" barrel in matte blue with a fiberglass stock, they called it a Model 7FS back in 89 and 90. That is the only two years they made it. I live in North Alabama but hunt in Southern Tennessee. I can't begin to tell you how many deer its shot, but it's a tack driver.
You'll love yours. Keep us posted on how it shoots, my family doctor had a 260 Rem. a couple of years ago, and it too was a tack driver. But one of his hunting buddies bugged him for so long to buy it he finally sold it to him. He's regreted ever since.

My son has the mod7 in 243 ss barrel and laminated stock, now that's a pretty rifle.
