finally got cast to run in an ar15
« on: January 06, 2026, 09:33:03 PM »
its been a battle. using the lee 55 grain gas check bullet. took a while to find a seating depth that would run and they had to be seated deep. then you have to flair the mouth to seat them or they would shave lead and wouldnt chamber. then i ran into bullets getting shoved into the case because of the violent action of a semi auto. used my factory crimp die and with enough crimp to hold the bullet they wouldnt chamber reliably. so i got a brain storm and left the cases lubed and instead of using the crimp die took the decapping rod out of one of my small base dies. set it till it was just touching the ram and ran the whole loaded round throug it for a final station. worked like a dream. shot 2 30 round mags through one of my ar pistols. one semi auto and one binary and they ran like a dream. wont know if they shoot decent for summer but there MUCH cheaper than ball bullets and alot of my shooting is on my simulated combat course and its all under 50 yards so accuracy isnt a big deal. add to that i didnt shoot them binary much because of the cost and used mt pistol caliber ars for that. now i can play without taking out a second mortgage

Good for you!! Old saying, Where there is a will, there's a way. Cast a 55 gr. gas check years back, use to shoot a 22 Hornet in a Contender 10''pistol in IHMSA Hunters class. Never shot enough to get really any good at it. Shot some out of a .223 T/C carbine, light loads. Probably would have worked on a woodchuck at 100 yds. but never shot one with that. Problem I'd have now, since it's been years since I cast any of those, is getting my fingers to keep the gas check in place, and trying to seat the bullets without something falling on the floor.  :'
