Got My Ole 30-30 Winchester Back
« on: November 27, 2025, 12:33:38 PM »
About 6 years ago I let my oldest have my 94 Winchester thinking he'd hunt with it. Nope! Didn't like the recoil  with that steel butt plate. So a few weeks ago I had my grandson stop by his dads' and pick it up for me.
My dad bought it new in 1957, fired 7 rounds through it, and put it back in the case. When I got old enough he gave it to me. I carried that rifle everywhere. And it served me well the first 10+ years of law enforcement also. I was carrying it in pictures on several front page news paper stories when I was called to track for different agencies.
Back then the Texas Highway Patrol, and the Texas Rangers were issued 870 Remington shotguns, and Winchester or Marlin 30-30s.
I carried the same. It doesn't look new anymore, but I'm glad to have my old friend back.
Both my shoulders are bad now, and I was wanting a Model 92 in 357 magnum, but it occurred to me I have a 170gr round nosed gas check bullet mold I bought years ago, and I can load my ole Winchester down to those velocities. Given I've started powder coating my cast bullets, I just gas check'em when I size'm. That aughta work.
I had given my son several hundred rounds of 30-30 ammo with the rifle, but none of that came back with the rifle. I'll just start over collecting brass.

Good deal
Nice sorta-Christmas-present.

I've taken a good many animals with
this old Marlin and I've never felt undergunned
with a 30/30 in hand.
You shouldn't have any problem finding
a multitude of cases to load.
Way too far away or I'd share some for a
starter batch. 30/30 is like 308w.
It's hard to load wrong.
Except for farther out in the western
parts of the state, a 30/30 has been
adequate for deer and swine. My
buddy's late dad regularly sniped
wt deer at 200yds-175yds with regular
wallyworld Rem Corelokt 150gr ammo.
No special ammunition needed
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I remember when you gave that rifle to your son!  It was a little sad to me then, knowing your history with it.  So, I'm glad you have it back.
