Smoke Those SS Vaquero Sights?

The sun is coming back stronger everyday here making my ss Vaquero sights brighter & brighter. (Should be great in the overcast fall woods)

Has anyone tried smoking them with a match, marker or such to knock the glare down in the summer months?

Your right on the polished front sight blade.  I have a glare problem as it is with my eyes and it is impossible to pickup the front sight under strong sunlight.  I don't know what you can put on that will not wipe off when going in and out of the holster.  Anyone got any ideas???...Mike

Gunruner:  use a majic marker, one of the brands that will wash off.  We use to use carbide lamps to smoke up our sights in the service and since I put a big glob of white paint on my front sight blade, I either 'black them up' with smoke or a majic marker, or go blind trying to see them in the bright sun.  HTH.  Mikey.

just pick up a can of sight black at the local gun dealer

you can use a checkering file on the backside of the sight blade. tape your barrel to protect it and go at it slowly only takes a couple of strokes to checker the rear edge of the blade the checkering breaks up the surface so it wont reflect the sun. then if you wish you can add some color to the notches left by the file.

Take it to a good smith and blue the whole gun.

I've seen some that have been bead-blasted, and that helps a lot to my eyes!

I use carbide to smoke my sights for competition.  Rubs off easily.  You can also get a Birchwood Casey flat black marker at most larger sporting good stores.  These work good.  The sight black spray works in a pinch, but also gets all over and does rub off easier.    For a temporary/permanent type finish, get a spray can of black primer or flat black paint and spray a little into the cap.  Dip a tooth pick or small brush in the paint and paint the edge of your sight for the summer.  Come fall, just chip it off with your fingernail, if its still there.

I have been using different color nail polish on my front sights for years. The best color for me is hot pink.  I have two S/S Ruger Bisley Vaquero's for bush carry and Cowboy Action shooting. I use black marker for CAS and the pink in the bush. The nail polish just scraps off with a knife.

I noticed this too. I recently used a sharpie marker to blacken my stainless sights and it worked well but came off when I cleaned my guns.

I used to use red auto body touch up paint on some blued gun sights to improve low light visibility, I'll try some black to see how it works on the stainless gun in the bright sun.
