Rock Island Armory 1911s
« on: October 29, 2025, 01:20:45 AM »
Anyone here own one? Picked up the stainless Officers Model yesterday. Never owned what I normally considered an off brand,  but  everytime I went into the store this one kept calling to me.
Tore it down last night to make a few adjustments I always do, and it looked pretty good. The tension on the extractor was so close to right, I left as is. This mornin I'll run a box of reloads through it and see if it will shoot.

Just bought one, but never shot it, in 10mm.  It is heavy compared to the composite pistols.

I had that Colt stainless Officers
model that I bought in the 80's.
It carried well and felt good in
the hand. It came to position very
naturally and I liked the way the
Chip McCormick magazines
worked in it.
It just wasn't that accurate even
after " breaking it in" and trying
different ammo configurations.
It was more or less a 10 yard
gun, or I just got the lemon out
of the batch.
One thing I've never heard anyone
talk about is the ability to use a
good steel 1911 as an up close
and personal persuader.
As in WHAP ! WHAP ! WHAP !
WHAP ! WHAP  ! WHAP  !
I know a regular full size 1911
will fill the bill
Not so sure about the polymer
peestols

Good Luck with it

The best 1911 I ever owned was a Rock Island. Much better than my Colt ever was. The Colt was WWI vintage and wasn't very reliable nor very accurate, the RI was both. But the Colt had memories, and I gave it to my younger son when I couldn't pull the slide back with my left hand and eventually sold the RI.

I had a Rock 1911 for a while, good pistol. I now have a Tisas, which is maybe better. All this to say, sometimes the off brands are just as good if not better than the Made in the USA models.
Disarming is a mistake free people can only make once.

Took the pistol out this mornin and ran a box of 50 through it. It dropped magazines while shooting. The slide would lock back with various rounds randomly. The slide seldom went into battery and had to be helped. And at least 1 ftf per magazine.
I don't mind doing a little tuning, and usually do, but this one was ridiculous. Took it back and replaced it with a Smith M&P Sheild Performance Center 45acp. Hope it shoots.  :-\

Good Lord
Screw that  !  !
Never personally owned a S&W polymer peestol.
Shot a neighbor's M&P 9 he had an off duty
as a C.O. for TDCJ at the Beto
Nary a hiccup.
Sister and B.I.L both have SDVE 9 Smiths
as their carry and a Buckmark and a Single
Six magnum

My EDC is a Springfield Garrison. It'll eat anything you feed it so the Rock Island was gonna be an extra. I've had 2 Smith &P Sheild compacts both in 40S&W, and both shot really well. This one is a full size, and it'll be a good house gun, along with a Model 60 Smith 357.
Like I'd said before, I've always stayed away from off brand pistols and thought I'd give this one a try. I did, but it broke me from trying another one.
