Sad, but it costs about $0.03 to make a penny. Government was loosing money to make pennies and they were 90% zinc today. Then, I read there is $0.07 in a nickel. A nickel is worth more in the raw metal than in it's stamped value. They could make pennies out of aluminum and put a copper coating on them. Don't know why they haven't. Could be weight. Blind people can feel the weight of a coin and feel the edges to see if they are smooth or have grooves. This is what inflation does.
