Trump trying to lower beef prices?
« on: October 22, 2025, 11:48:43 PM »
I'm reading Trump is trying to import beef to lower prices for consumers. How will that effect American ranching? I know beef is high but is this the way to fix it?

Yep, he's letting Argentina import beef at a lower tariff. Will it hurt us beef growers. Hell yes! You'll be eating beef that you have no idea how it was raised. I personally know cattle ranchers HERE, that use harmone implants that are so strong, the calf will gain an extra 30 to 40 pounds. The harmone is the size of a grain of rice, and goes in the skin of the ear. There is no telling how the Argentine beef growers are growing beef to increase their profits.
I refuse to inject my calves with this crap, and sell grass fed beef. This stuff stays in the beef, and I believe has a lot to do with 8 and  9 year old boys going into puberty, girls the same age doing the same.
Stores label their meat as USA, but its actually only processed in the US.

That's what I'm afraid of and reading myself.  My brother works on one of the largest ranches in Arizona and he says the ranchers are very upset with his plan.

This year was the first year in 5 years that we finished the year in the black. Argentine beef will likely erase that. We'll see. I start calving in mid January, and am finished by May 1st. I wean calves at 120 days old, so I start selling around the last of May, early June. I'll know then how this Trump move will affect all of us here in west Texas, and there are some really big, and famous Ranches here.

Back in the mid '60s when I worked in the meat market at Kroger we got in 70 pound boxes of lean Argentine beef. We only used it in making burger meat. Straight from the box it was ground and sold as ground round and ground chuck. Mixed around half and half with trimmings it was sold as just hamburger meat.

We didn't get any imported meat other than that.

You said you sold cattle on the hoof at $5 a pound, that's ridiculous if you ask me. That means even the cheapest cuts have to sell at that or more. That's just not sustainable for most low income people.

Read yesterday it was going for roughly half that at the Chicago stock yards. That is a more sustainable price.

Well Bill, I don't remember saying I sold calves for 5 dollars a pound, I might have said almost that much, but I'm like every other beef rancher, I get what the market is paying. If you consider it ridiculous, don't buy it. I'm not in the business to loose money, raising cattle ain't cheap.

Dee, what do you think caused the price to go up so much? Not starting an argument, anything it particular? Raising a few chickens over the years, glad to have them when that phony bird flu was pushed, and egg prices went to almost $4/dz. When I seen news stories were price's never changed in other country's, they had a border wall that kept the bird flu out.(my a**) Think it will straighten out in a year or so? I'll keep buying pork and chicken before I buy beef from another country.

The way I read the prices are about 2.50 a pound, far cry from 5.00. Still by the time beef gets to the store it climbs a bunch. I don't care about the price I refuse to buy foreign beef.

When he made the post he said $5 a pound. He has now edited it to take out any specific price. I couldn't care less really.

I don't pay much attention to the price of stuff I buy. I buy what we want and like to eat and price just really doesn't enter into the picture. I never bother to add it up at the end of month but I'd guess I spend around $600 or more most months for the three of us. I just dropped $405 this week and wasn't even at a real grocery store, just the small one about 3 miles from me that likely has no more floor space than my small home does.

I go to a real grocery store perhaps 3-4 times a year or less. When I go I stock up and buy all of the shrimp they have of the brand we like and almost all of the fish sticks brand we like. I usually buy 10-12 pounds or more of child mild sausage cuz that's what we prefer. We eat what's called mild but much prefer the child mild. None of us like hot foods. I generally drop $450-$500 on those trips.

When you get up there in age one of the truly enjoyable things people got is food! Nothing wrong with stocking up on what you and your loved ones enjoy. We are the same way with our quarter pound hot dogs (HEB) and a lot of other good stuff. HEB also have quarter pound precooked Angus burgers that are great.  Nothing like American beef!

The Un-United States buys a lot of beef from Mexico. Mexico has a screw worm epidemic, and nuthin is coming across the border now because of it. American beef growers have had to downsize over the years because of that, and all of a sudden Mexico got shut down, and now there is a beef shortage.
Government done the same with gasoline. Downsized American production and bought crude oil from other countries.

Bill can you point me to this 5 dollars a pound I said I got? I can't find it.

You can't find it because you edited it out of your post. Unlike you and other members I can see such things when they happen. Just like I can see all of your posts you deleted and they got sent to the trash can.

I have visibility of such things.

We're NOT going to have a long discussion or argument over this. In the grander skim of things it's irrelevant. It's over.

There is a article on newsmax about a ceo in the beef industry meeting President Trump, I think Trump can be reasoned with on business that is good for Americans. I don’t know enough about the beef industry to say much more then, mmm mmm good.
