Our Future Leaders
« on: September 28, 2025, 03:17:10 PM »
After 35+ years some puke tried to get into my credit card, so it got locked 3 days before my 4 days in Eagles Nest. So, it's was a cash only trip. On the way home we stopped at the McDonalds in Raton NM for a burger to go.
The bill was $23.80 so I gave the little cutie a 20, and a 5. She gave me back $4.20. :o
Bless her dumbass little heart, she had an extremely confused look on her face when I handed her $2.00 back. I had her count it again, she still didn't get it, so told her to just put the $2.00 in the register, and left.

Just think. In 3 or 4 more years, she gets to vote.

Your right, it was 3. I posted this when I got home. Should've took a nap before I posted it, knowing you would read it.  ;)

You have to have somebody teach them. Take what they gave you and put it on the top of the register, don't put it in the drawer as long as it's more money than what the item cost. Then, give them back their change. First coinage until it rounds up to the next even dollar. Then, give them ones, fives, tens, and twenties until it rounds up to the the whole dollar equal to the payment. Apparently no one has taught that young lady that way to accept a cash payment.

Why am I telling you? You know how to make change. Had "she" been a pimple faced "he" would you have been so gentlemanly (rhetorical question to which I know 2 answers)?

In the past 30 years I have on occasions, told the cashier - You better count that again - they caught their error and thanked me for it.

The odd thing is ,  for decades cash registers have listed proper change.

Your method goes all the way around the tub to find the handle. No thanks.

Yes, I would have. I don't steal, and I don't make a difference in my demeanor based on complexion, or gender. How about you?

I had a purple haired girl with nose ring give me change back. She gave me back my 100 dollar bill and 20 something dollars so, I’d have gotten free groceries and the 20 plus dollars.

This one had a lot of makeup she didn't need, but was polite, and devoid of any usable knowledge on making change.

This one I wouldn’t say polite but not un polite just indifferent. She looked at the receipt for a while then gave me the change, I handed all the money back to her and told her to try again. She said something about she thought it was a $50 which still didn’t make sense and I saw another girl that worked there smiling…

Yes
The correct way is to set the cash tendered on
top of the drawer until the transaction is completed
and the correct change is accepted.
A proper cashier or bank teller verbally counts
back as the cash is being given to the customer,
or is laying it out on the counter.
They don't know how to give change back
properly either. Unless requested otherwise,
you're supposed to give back the least number
of pieces of currency that equals the correct
change. As in a five dollar bill and not five ones.
Or two quarters for fifty cents change and
not five dimes ( or a fifty cent piece, but few
ever have any anymore)
Ten dollar bill for ten dollars instead of ten
ones or two fives,  etc. etc.

A huge problem is the number of functionally
illiterate people running around in the country
today. And those with no common sense.

The coping gene has died out someway somehow

Which was my point. Teenagers don't know how to do anything anymore. They can program things on their computers, set up mobile phones, dye their hair some bizarre color, cover themselves in tattoos, but they can't do simple everyday things like count change.
When I was young and well into my 40s I did minor repairs on my cars, and still do on my home.
Todays youngsters don't even know where the spare tire is, much less change the flat tire.
In a few years, they'll be in charge.

Scary though about being in charge! I remember my Dad complaining about the future of youths when I was a kid,  I know some things never change but I think cellphones are helping to eliminate a lot of the kids common sense values we had growing up. What a shame to see it happen right before our very eyes

Remember, the youngsters we try to function with in the common workplace are not the Dean's List, Alpha Males and Females, Who is Who in American High School, outstanding sportsmen and women, and extracurricular enthusiasts that all high schools produce today. You won't find these individuals in blue collar manual labor jobs but they may be in the back as superintendents, managers in a department store, or perhaps just eye candy in the store front to whom the Public can relate that is "advertising" for the business, but they won't necessarily be out stocking shelves, unless they just like to do that to stay busy. The good ones always find work.

Alright Dee...how would you write up the method to teach a kid how to return change in an overpaid cash transaction?

I'm not interested in teaching somebodys kid how to count change. Its up to the store manager to do that.  8)

The parents also failed these children, from what I’ve seen it’s easier to buy them a phone and a remote control to a gaming system.

Agreed.  I taught my 3 to count change, and have no interest in teaching anybody else's kid.

Just recently someone I know started working for a business. She has to close her drawer out at the end of the day. She noticed each coin drawer had a piece of paper taped to it. on the pieces of paper were written 5 cents, 10 cents, and 25 cents. She asked what they were for. She was told it was for another employee that didn't know what a quarter, dime, or nickel was or looked like.  This girl had graduated high school and was going to college. Its was unbelievable.  I asked my 8 year old grandson if he could identify coins and their value. His reply was dah..

Todays young adults collectively have been given everything. They don't know how to do anything, and most collectively aren't interested in learning.
Solution? Let them learn the hard way.
I don't know how many times in my 75 years I've heard: I want my children to have what I didn't have growing up. Well, "success daddy", how do you like the results?

How much is 2+2? Let me check my phone. Where's the spare tire? Let me call a service truck. I don't have any phone service! WHAT DO I DO!?
