Poor sleep
« on: September 04, 2025, 03:30:29 PM »
No matter what time I go to sleep I’m up 4 hours later and then can’t get back to sleep. I move to my recliner then fall asleep for another couple hours. Anyone else have this malady?

No matter what time I go to bed, I get up at 4am. Wife talked me into taking 2 magnesium capsules about 20 minutes before bedtime and that helps a lot.

Never heard of taking magnesium, for awhile I was taking melatonin and it helped some.

If it weren't for poor sleep I'd get no sleep at all.

I have insomnia and have had it since I was a teen. I also have sleep apnea which is what wakes you once asleep. Really a CPAP is about the only fix for apnea and I take a prescription sleeping pill for the insomnia.

What sleep I get is still crappy but some is better than none. I take daily naps to help and get by OK.

I would advise having a sleep study done to find out if you have apnea. It's a horrible experience but only lasts 8 hours so you can survive it. IF you have apnea find a CPAP machine and a mask you can tolerate. Wearing a full face mask is a horrible experience but it's better than no sleep. So long as you can fall asleep in short order when you lay down you likely don't have insomnia so a sleeping pill is likely not needed.

Neither had I but it seems to work with no hangover, might give it a try, it costs the price of a bottle of magnesium supplement in the vitamin isle. Or not.  :-\

I have sleep issues on and off. For a few weeks I'll sleep ok, then will come a spell where I wake at 3:00 and can't go back to sleep. Have been taking magnesium for awhile now, and it is good for many body functions. Good idea to have your magnesium level checked in your blood work panel. There are different types of magnesium. The 3 most common are, Citrate which is taken for a laxative and gut health. Magnesium oxide is taken to aid in constipation and indigestion. Glycinate is the most common and what most people take, and is the best over all. Its the one that can aid in sleep, and help with anxiety issues.  Not sure how true it is but its said that most people don't get enough magnesium, because of their diet.

I’ll be giving the magnesium a try as I don’t really like the slight hangover effect of the melatonin and it only works for awhile. Thanks…

Read your post just before hitting the sack last night. Only took one, but got close to 6 hours of sleep before the need to go to the bathroom at 5am. Tonight will take 2 and see how that works. Thanks!!

Much the same for me...  I can sleep about 5 hours, then must get up.   ...And yes, catch up time in my lounge chair later on in the afternoon.

Yeah
Just got through Fri-Sat having to go to the clinic
and sleep in their bed with and without one of those
mask doo-dads and about 2 dozen wires from head
to toe.
They did have good coffee and a really good shower
is about all I can compliment them on
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I will some times just take a shot of Nyquil cold/flu medicine; I fall asleep with in on half hour, but, if I have to get up to pee, I am very tired and always sit down rather that standing up and swaying.
Works good for a few day but then it will start lingering in the morning.

I spent so much time in the military and afterwards worked a job where I got up at 4am every day. The wife and myself hit the sack every night about 8pm and rise at 4am every day. I think it's old age causing the restlessness and hard to get back to sleep after a bathroom break several times a night. Back in my younger day going to sleep at midnight and waking early was easy but not anymore.
