Not exactly what the title implies.  As I read it, it's not a new federal license test, but a requirement that states insure that THEIR drivers tests include provisions to insure their drivers meet certain standards.  So, no NEW test.  Just a bit of hyperbole.   ;)

As I understand it states are free to modify their requirements tests to suit themselves, but the federal government IS involved in changing licensing drivers in all states, and IS furnishing guidelines. The trucking industry is a more prominent example.

I've seen some old people that are as worse, or more worse than drunk drivers. With the crack down on drunk drivers, I'm surprised something like this hasn't happened sooner.

...Last I knew, driver's licenses were issued by the states, rather than the federal government.

There is at least one area where s bit closer scrutiny, may be needed..

IF Alabama is as slow adopting this as they are at star IDs I'll be long dead before they implement it. I still don't have a star ID.

They should get a handle on the heroin and fentanyl users passing out in their cars, hitting trees, parked cars, and houses. They shoot up at their dealer, and try to drive home.

If they want to do something constructive,
change the intoxication manslaughter to
intoxication murder, or in the case here
to intoxication capital murder.
If you kill because you drove drunk or
high, you should stand a good chance

the way i understand it at least here is no more on line renewal. after 80 you have to go in in person, take the eye test and pass the states basic written test which 16 year olds that never drove before have no problem with. law id like to see changed is anyone over 80 no longer can haul a camper or drive a motor home. big tourist area here in the summer and were flooded with old people from down south that travel around camping in rigs they cant handle. backing up traffic for miles because theyre afraid to drive them over 50!! at minimum they should have to pass a competency test like we did when issued cdl's. they cause many more accidents up here than speeders do!! might be fine on the 4 lane roads down south but up here 4 lanes dont exist and even passing lanes are rare. heck i think that cdl skills test should be mandatory for any age of a driver pulling a trailer over 20 feet or any motorhome that requires duelies. you can pull into a camper rental store and drive off with a 30 foot camper or 35 foot motor home when the biggest thing you ever drove was a smart car!! they also dont have blindspot visibility as good as a car or pickup. weve talked about the dangers on motorcycles here. id bet 80 percent of the times ive been cut off or about driven into the trees was by these idiot tourist in rigs they dont have the skill to operate

Yeah we have the same problem here in Texas. Their called Snowbirds and flock in from the northern states and plug up the roads and cause kaos All the time. They can't stand their cold ass states in the winter so they make Texas miserable with their presence. Damn if you love your state so much then stay the hell home.

Here in Ohio, the vision test has been on the books for decade's. The reaction/cognitive test or drivers with instructors over 87, no. Not a bad idea I guess. Real problem I've run into isn't old drivers so much. People on their cell phone is what pi**es my off. Twice in the last 2 years, not this year-YET- had to throw the Sporty into a hell of a slide because some brat, couldn't put the phone down and rolled thru a stop sign. The other was on a 4 lane, I was on the inside lane and they kept swerving right, when we came to a stop light, and his passenger window was down, wont repeat the words I used, but whoever he was talking to, heard me I'm pretty sure. That's against the law here, but never hear of anyone getting cited unless they actually cause an accident.

I’ve always thought it was a good idea to test older drivers more frequently. Pick a number, 60? 65? 80? Just pick one. I’m 79 now, and I haven’t changed my opinion.

I personally feel that older drivers sometimes are a hazard but I believe phone usage contributes more of a distraction then all old people combined. Since the no use of phones while driving passed here in Texas I honestly think I have never seen a cop stop anyone when on their phones! I have observed people on phones when police were present and not once were they stopped. Hard to blame old people when other laws are constantly broken.

same here all the southerners flock up here in the summer to escape the heat. free camping at the casino and its been nick named "little texas" believe me you have your share of idiots too. real chuckle is walking into the casino and seeing them all with cowboy boots and hats. closest theyve been to a horse was the petting zoo when they were kids. just a bunch of phony posers. now i ride harleys alot and will say southern harley riders are probably better than the average here. no doubt because we have only 6 decent mounts to ride and even thats a stretch. they ride all year.

problem will be if they implement some kind of a skill test it will be so easy my dead grandpa could pass it. they want those license renewal funds and the 200 dollar plus plate money you pay every year. then the first time they pull a license on some old black women every democrat in the country will scream prejudice. only fair way to do it would be no more renewal for anyone past 90.

The hats and boots are just the fashion in their part of the country.  No posers.  Unless you think that anyone that wears a leather jacket and doesn't ride a motorcyle is a poser.  Or anyone that wears a flannel shirt and isn't a lumberjack is a poser.  Just clothes.

In Minn. , usually, if you have a traffic violation causing an accident, or are stopped for impeding traffic, you get tested to see if you should be driving.

My one grandfather stopped driving because he would not take the test in his eighties.

People pee and moan about speeders , but , it is the slow driver holding up traffic or not getting up to speed that is far more dangerous, as the head of the Minn. Highway Patrol said years back.
Not all older drivers are slow, but a lot of imports, legal or not,  should not be driving a golf cart much less an automobile.

[/quote]      I doubt anyone has the ability to know what peoples clothes be it a hat or boots has to do with being a poser? Never heard the phrase of being a poser. Must be a Michigan thing, Lord knows we have enough of them in the winter and some are pretty damn weird.

sorry but there is good reason bikers wear leathers. they protect you if you go down. i wont ride my bike in a tshirt and shorts and a pair of sneakers. no sane rider would that actually doesnt want skin grafts. i even wear a helmet which is optional in MI. only reason to wear a cowboy hat unless your working outside is to pose as a cowboy. i wear leather boots when i ride but dont go to the casino in my motor home with a black leather jacket, boots and chaps. if i did id surely be a poser. cattle farms up here too and lots of horses. dont remember in years seeing some poser even riding a horse with a cowboy hat. wranglers, ball cap and a flannel shirt or t shirt and a good pair of work boots is what you see farmers wearing up here. if dee wants to wear a cowboy hat and boots for practical reasons then im all for it.  he works as a cowboy and earned the right to even wear them out saturday night. but thes idiots from a texas good sam club wear them their posers

Back in the 70's when I was riding every where, couple biker bars scattered around Toledo, use to have a couple at one, jump on the bike and ride to another. In every bar, there was always one or 2 guys, leathers, ]worn out jeans, biker wallet in the back pocket. Never rode a bike, but wanted to fit in. Our term back then, we called them sidewalk commando's. Usually could tell, always wore tennis shoes.

So if you wear a ball cap and don't play in the major leagues you're a poser?  If you wear running shoes and aren't a marathoner you're a poser?  Again, if you wear a leather jacket and don't ride a motorcyle you're a poser?  They aren't wearing chaps and carrying a lasso.  They're wearing a hat and boots.  I assume you do the same.  This is ridiculous and just your bias showing.  It's the fashion where they live.

I think it's his displeasure with a couple of Texans on here and not posing as he states. Of course I'm just speculating.

Yes; although the flight south is more common, we have them both ways..  In fact, some folks move south, then come back north for the summer.  Some born in the south, come north for the summer also.

...Guess they should be called snowbirds or sunbirds...depending upon their location at any given time.

But anyway, it will be interesting to see how many of the federal guidelines on senior drivers licenses will be adopted by the states.  :o
