Lyman hand primer worn out.
« on: June 12, 2025, 12:31:05 PM »
Should have done some checking first. Ordered 2 plastic replacement trays for my Lyman hand primer, figure something wore out. Primers weren't seating in far enough. Wasn't the trays, the rod connected to the handle, that push's up the seating stem in the plastic tray was. Put the new tray in for small primers, got 400 5.56 brass ready, but seen the first couple were just like what was happening when I quit couple weeks ago and ordered the trays. Hate to order a brand new handle, thinking of driving out the pin and making a new rod out of steel. Pain in the butt, but, it I do it right, it'll last longer than I will. Anybody have that problem, and any suggestions??

I wore out several Lee primers but just replaced them or sometimes the parts that wore out. I love the Lee unit and have never used anything else. I primed a few with the press initially then got a Lee and have put every primer since in with them. I do hate the current trays on them tho.

I dunno if I'll ever load another round tho honestly. I have more ammo than I'm likely to shoot up in this life time and that's even if I last 2-3 times longer than I expect to. At my current rate of consumption I think I have about 10,000 years worth of ammo on hand. Now iffen I were to do more shooting that would reduce the number of years supply I have.

wore out many lees. they work well but just dont hold up. now they changed them (for safety!!) and i cant stand them. 2 years ago i bought a frankfort arsenal unit. it works as well or better then the lee's and its built like a tank. i dont think even i could wear it out in a lifetime. some of the best money i ever spent on loading gear. if you do progressive with primer tubes do your self a big favor and get their primer tube filler. best i ever used and that includes that 400 dollar dillion pos

Spent most of yesterday on the tractor doing some brush hogging for the neighbor. Decided this morning, fix the hand primer. Success!! Drove out the hinge pin, and the rod that push's up the seater came out with a little wiggling. Aluminum, and could see how the rounded end was wore down, not much, but some. Found a piece of round stock, steel, chop sawed it off about 3/16'' longer than the original. Figure that gave me some grinding room. Drilled the pin hole, ground it down to diameter, tapped the pin back thru. Saved me about $60+ from ordering another one. Celebrate this evening with a cigar and a drink. ;D

I’ve had a lot of success with projects lately. Kind of eerie.
