From A I:

Farm-fresh eggs and commercial eggs can differ in several ways, including:

Living conditions
Farm chickens may have better living conditions, such as access to natural feed sources and sunlight. Commercial chickens may be kept in confined spaces with limited freedom to roam.

Nutrition
Farm-fresh eggs may have more nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and vitamin D. They may also have less cholesterol.

Taste
Farm-fresh eggs may have a richer flavor and may be fresher, since they are typically laid and consumed locally.

Color
Farm-fresh eggs may come in a range of colors, including brown, white, blue, or green.

Shell
Farm-fresh eggs may have stronger and thicker shells.

Glad you enjoy them… What color do your eggs come out? I’m guessing brown :)

Seems like more than ever, young families are keeping a small flock of chickens.  That is a common move around here.

I'd like to have 5 or 6 laying hens, but Linda says no.  :-\

My wife says no to a dog for decades now and I’ve been abiding by her wishes, lately I’ve been bringing the subject up to her and she may come around. Gotta pick your battles.

When Linda was a little girl, her grandma's rooster ran her to the house. They ate the rooster, but not her fear of chickens. I don't think she'll cave on the chickens.  :-\

Title of the thread: Farm fresh brown eggs

Question: What difference does it make that the eggs have a brown shell?

None, it's all in peoples heads!

My Mother and Dad were farmers. Dad was an Arkansas Cotton farmer, and Mama was an commercial Egg farmer. We raised around 500 White Leghorns as well as the typical combination chickens in the back yard.  As They were egg and meat producers. I think the culled Leghorns were sold for dog food. As a kid I hated chickens! Eggs were harvested the old fashion way. (By hand() We all helped! There was a reason for large families back then. :o  I'm back in the chicken business again! I just purchased 6 Rhode Island Red hen chicks.

BTW....Foods with high carotene levels like carrots, spinach, kale, and other dark leafy greens, grass produce darker yokes in eggs. Eggs we get in the store are usually fed grains like wheat and corn. They are pale yellow as a result. Our backyard hen eggs were darker yoked than the caged Leghorns. They all ate the same to me. The reason most home grown eggs have a taller, rounded yoke, is because of the age. Most supermarket eggs have been in storage for a while, and as eggs age, the yokes tend to flatten out. Still good though, and make better boiled eggs, because they are much easier to peel  :)
