Author Topic: In need of counsel concerning caliber (Read 931 times)

I have a buddy looking for direction. He is ordering a Fox Valley Encore barrel. Stainless and wants it 26" long. But he is stuck on what caliber. Right now he has a 270, 7 x 57, 30-06, 7mm stw and a 300wsm. He is thinking 308 but I think he is overloaded in the midrange calibers. He really does not want something like a 243 as he just sold one as well as a 6mm. I kind of think he needs something mmmmm.......maybe a little "exotic" something that might hold his interest for longer than a few months. But am really at a loss as to what to suggest. He does reload, but he goes thru rifles like water thru a leaking bucket. Always in the trading/selling/buying mood. He just loves to have lots of experiences with lots of rifles and calibers. Any ideas?

How about a 6.5x55 Swede Mauser bbl. I have not shot one personally, but I hear this tound is an amazing tack driver. The Swedes supposedly build match bench guns on mauser actions using the 6.5. Its unusual enough to not be "the same old rounds" like the 06, 308, 270 etc. If he wants REAL fun and adventure there is always the Ackley Improved series of cartridges. This would require him to add more steps to his reloading process and may just keep him interested.

If he`s over loaded with the mid-range rounds why not try the new .204 Ruger. 4250 fps. with factory ammo, should reach out and touch them.

Step it up with a 375 H&H, just bought one in a Encore and luv it. Maybe a 45/70? :roll:

I'd be tempted to go either with a 7x57 or a 280 Rem.

I would go with the 25-06 as well. The round is very versatile,from varmint to deer,with lots of load choices.

Well, I know he isnt going to Africa or Alaska. And he is covered for anything from moose to antelope. This is just to replace one of his 270's that he sold. That is why I am thinking he needs something of an adventure. How about a 6.5-06?

my fav 25 caliber is 257 robts. a little exotic but not terribly.i dont have one in encore but i do have 2 in ruger 77 i love them .a friend was so impressed with performance he bought a ruger then had vv make a hangun barrel for his encore,last year he killed 2 bucks with it.nice little cartride,in my opinion.

I'd go for a 270, 7mm, or 300 WSM. You'll gain a inch of barrel due to the shorter case alone. Also you'll have better luck with a 24 inch barrel due to its stiffness. I know Fred, at Bullberry, kind of cringes when you ask for a 26 incher.

Well, he is still looking. Has kind of a thing for the Remington guide gun. But calibers . . . still wide open. :?

How about the .250 Savage, either standard or Ackley Improved? It's a sweet round, performs the same or better than a .243, will handle heavier bullets, and kicks less.

Or maybe a .300 Savage. As good as the .308, in a somewhat smaller package.

Or a 6.5-.284. Factory brass available from Hornady and Norma, and is a great long range round, the equal of the 6.5-06 in a shorter package.

Well, he made the call today . . . and ordered a SS 26" 7m-08. Even though it is another mid-range caliber he heard so much good about it that he had to have a barrel in it. Thanks for all the imput.
