Just had an idea - tell me if it's stupid

I'm playing with a .357magnum for both revolver and lever action.  Of course, in those instances it is wise to crimp.  However, this can be to the detriment of paper jackets.

I'm thinking of switching the bushing from a 9mm Lee Factory Crimp Die (LFCD) into my .357 LFCD.  This should be an easy, no tools, way of getting a taper crimp on my revolver cartridges.

However, is the roll crimp absolutely necessary to hold the bullets in place in a tube magazine, and under the recoil of a revolver?

I have no comment on the 9mm crimp idea.  How hot the load is will set the stress level your crimp will have to deal with.  That is the one variable you need to state for your problem.  I am sure there are those who can tackle the math for computing the inertia and recoil (not me).  If you are talking cowboy loads you may be home free.  Since original PP bullets were loaded with BP I am sure the compressed powder was a intergral part of keeping the bullet from being driven down the neck.  I guess the PP pistol round with smokeless could back out on recoil where the tube fill will be driven in by the collum of lead ahead.  This may be an interesting thread.  JB

Well I use 17.6 grains of Lil' Gun for my .357 paper patching.  That's enough to make 100% density.

In the revolver it recoils.  But from the rifle it's not bad, some recoil.  Put it this way, with a steel butt plate I could should 100's of these rounds in an afternoon and not have a sore shoulder.
