I have the 06 factory version.  When it comes down to it both rounds ae close enough to be brothers, so I will give you my input.  The factory bbls, IMHO are pretty beefy as it is, so I do not think a super heavy bull bbl is really all that important for these 2 rounds.  What I like about the 24" bbl is that you get full size preformance from a gun that is roughly the length of a Ruger 10/22.  Despite the farily recent posts about accuracy problems with factory bbls my gun, in my case, shoots a hell of a lot better than I do right now.  I sighted in some 125gr loads at 100 yards a few weekends ago and put 3 rounds into about 2 inches.  More than enough to kill coyote (what Im using them for,) and plenty good for deer.  The loads were Federal classics, so Im sure moving up to premium will cut some distance from the grouping.  I have not yet geared up for reloading the 06 yet, so Im sure I can cut any group size once I begin testing.   So my opinion?  Get your 270 and never look back, you will probably be so happy you wont care about an extra 2 inches and a few ounces of metal missing from the bbl taper.  :D

I have the .270 in 24 SST.

I had a devil of a time with the shots stringing high in a cold barrel.  The first rounds were about 4 inches high at 100 yards.  They grouped lower after the 3rd shot or so very nicely.  After much cursing and belly aching, I ran about 80 rounds through it, cleaning often.  Then I fired 5 rounds and left it dirty. I let the rifle rest for two days. Tried again from a dirty, cold barrel and now the sucker now shoots 3/4 inch groups without stringing as the barrel heats.  Federal Premium 130 gr shot best and I tried all the "high dollar" stuff.

Lesson learned for this gun.  Fire enough to break it and clean it good while breaking it in.  After that, fire 10 rounds the day before season and then hunt with a dirty barrelfor that week.

I have a 24" .270 barrel in blue.
I also have a .223 26" heavy barrel.
The .223 will shoot sub half inch groups at 100 yards. The best I ever got from the .270 was 2" at the same range.
Needless to say I'm disappointed in the 270 barrel and have returned it to T/C for the second time.
Maybe I should have tried to shoot it dirty

I've noticed the clean barrel problem with both all of my Encore barrels.  They start about 3" off, then settle into ragged holes after about 3-4 shots.  Since they are stainless, I shoot a few rounds through them at the beginning of the hunting season and clean them only after the season is over.
