Which Bolt gun in 308 for accurate shooting?
« on: March 24, 2004, 09:46:51 AM »
I'm basically thinking of some day getting a heavy long barreled 308 bolt gun for tack driving shooting, if I ever develop my skills that well.  I'm talking sub MOA.

I'm basically thinking heavy 26" blued barrel.

So far I'm thinking of the following:

Rem 700 VLS

Winchester 70 Stealth II

Savage 10FP-LE2

Sako 75 Varmint

Ruger 77 Mark II Target

CZ 527 Varmint Kevlar

Any others that I missed?

Not sure what I'd need in a stock, but the factory Savage and factory Winchester aren't my cup of tea.  Mcmillan stock looks nice but seems to be a multi hundred doller option.  Would consider other accuracy oriented stocks for that price.  I'd want it to be comfortably under $1000

I really think any of the above would fit the bill.  But I am biased towards Sako rifles.  Of course you know that you will not get a scope for your price limit. . . unless you can find a rifle used.  I have a Sako in 308 and really enjoy it.

BattleRifleG3,

Although I don't own one the most accurate out of the box rifles showing up at the ranges is the Savage bolt action rifles.  I got one ordered, just hasn't come in yet.  Lawdog

Tikka also has a new varmint rifle in its T3 line. Another to consider might be the Howa varmint line. :P

I'd go for a Ruger MKII M77 VT (Varmint Target).  Second choice would be a Savage.

Here's the Ruger... KM77 MKII VT

Here is the Savage I would get -- 12BVSS

Without a doubt - best trigger will be the Savage.  Best overall rifle - you decide!

Anyone have links to Tikka and Howa's websites?

Wonder how Weatherbies would compare, though they're far too expensive.

Does that Weatherby have a heavy 26" barrel?  Would be nice...

I just checked gunsamerica.com and the Rem 700 VLS is going for $560.

If the pole it still open i say savage for the value. i got 10FP form walmart for $270. it has the 24 in barrel. if looking at a savage you need to check out Snipercountry.com and read olsarg views and check out savageshooters.com. the SC is where my stock came form and my base came form SS.  it is the Ken farell(SP?) one pice and i rely like the clearance on it but i am going to have to use low rings to get a good sight picture. hope this helps

the two articales egarding the goast dancer project shouold be good reading to help you decide on the savage quality. the third on optics could be intersting just as food for thought.

I have the Savage 10FP-LE2 and it is a tack driver. I have a IOR- Valdada 2.5X10X56 Illuminated Scope on it. You can see them at: http://www.valdada.com/vn/ior/02e

I lucked into a Savage Police Tactical.
A shooting buddy had 'one on the way' and she made him sell it to buy baby stuff.
I let him shoot it when we go to the range. He likes to just stand and hold it.
125 TNT's shoot out of it OK,(Groundhawg Busters) but it really shines with heavier bullets.
I have printed sub .50" groups w/168 HPBT's all afternoon.
I also have a model 12 series J in .220 Swift.
Serial # 0169308.
Has anyone heard of a Model 12 series J?
All the models I see are 112.

My most accurate rifle is a Schmitt-Rubin Straight-pull which uses a 7.5 x 55 mm (.308) round.

I was one of those guys that posted "Other"........

My vote would be for the Rem 700.  I have had excellent results with all my 700's and the skies the limit for aftermarket accessories/changes should you decide to modify along the way.

BattleRifleG3,

Go to the Greybeard Forum for Military Surplus rifles and just read.......

You will learn alot about the Schmitt-Rubin K-31 - I've bought two of 'em now and don't regret the small investment.  A K-31 is like shooting a Swiss Watch with the kick of a .30-30 and that about says it all.

I have a Remington 700 VLS in .308Win that I bought about 6 years ago. I replaced the factory trigger with an 8 oz Rifle Basix. Trigger is beautiful and rifle groups well under an inch consistently.  :-)
