Remington Ultra mags???
« on: March 24, 2004, 02:01:56 AM »
I was looking at ballistics while searching for maybe a new gun.  And I noticed that the Remington Ultra Mags, mainly the 338 Ultra mag is quite a bit more powerful over the 338 win. mag.   Does anyone have one who had a 338 win mag before you got the Ultra mag what do you think of it?

I had a 338 UM in a Rem S/S Sendero rifle.  It was nice, heavy, but nice.  Shot good groups also.  10 to 15 shots at the range was plenty.  Actually killed an Auodad ram at 506 yards with very little drop.  A friend of mine really loved this gun so I traded it for a 338 win mag.  I lost a little energy and trajectory but the dead animals don't seem to notice the difference.  It is more powerful but it's a little trickier to find ammo.  Neither of us reload so I have the advantage there.

Seems like if regular fries are enough, then get the WM.  If you like your fries supersized, then get the UM.

Food for thought - Federal offers "High Energy" loads for the .338WM.  I don't know how much more powerful they are, but you might want to take a look at 'em.  Seems to me that if the High Energy loads are just as fast, then you're better off with the .338WM and get the HE loads when, and if, you need them.  As such, you won't have a problem with the factory loads issue.

As Zachary said "Food for though" - You may also want to take into account that the longevity of some of the Remington Ultra Magnums is in some doubt.  At the moment Remington has cut way back on the number of models you can get both the .338 and the .375 RUM's in.  Sales are way down on these two cartridges and unless this trend changes the "bean counters" will cut these cartridges from the Remington line.  In fact sales are down on all of the RUM line.  It is a sad but true truth that it is the accountants that control what stays and what goes in manufacturing.  You may want to reconsider getting a RUM due to future availability of ammo.  Lawdog

But at the same time they are makeing more models in the 300RUM,and Savage,Browning and Winchester  is chambering em too.Plus frederal is makeing ammo now too.Most of the long range guys are useing 338RUM's and 300RUM Ackley's (tomahawk).My brothers got a .375 RUM and that thing kills on one end and wounds on another,I wouldn't wanna shoot it too much,but I have killed a deer with it,INSTANT death.Should see that hole.Last i've heard they are selling em pretty good,My 300RUM came straight out of remington(employee) and they didn't have any,it had to be built.My next sendero is gonna be a 338RUM.

The following is the total list of models that remington is now offering for their RUM line of cartridges.

Remington only offers the 7mm RUM in four models;

 • Model 700 BDL(and the LH version)
 • Model 700 BDL SS
 • Model 700 LSS(and the LH version)
 • Model 700 Sendero SF

Remington only offers the .300 RUM in four models;

 • Model 700 BDL(and the LH version)
 • Model 700 BDL SS
 • Model 700 LSS(and the LH version)
 • Model 700 Sendero SF

Remington only offers the .338 RUM in three models;

 • Model 700 BDL LH
 • Model 700 BDL SS
 • Model 700 LSS(and the LH version)

Remington only offers the .375 RUM in ojne model;

 • Model 700 LSS

As far as a Sendero in .338 RUM, SORRY that was one of the models that Remington dropped.  all offerings are down and that is due to decressed sales on all models.  What is left is what is still selling.  In an effort to boost the sale of the .338 RUM Remington dropped the .338 Win. Mag. from their line up even though it was the best selling of the .338 calibers.  No Remington sales are not up.  Lawdog

They still make the 338 and 375 ultra mags out of the african line up.I love my 300 and 375 and would not trade them for a 300 win mag or 375 h/h.

Yup, go to any gun show in northern Va. and you'll see a .338 Sendero, last years models!!!  And seeing you asked the questions could you tell me exactly which models Savage, Browning and Winchester chamber for the .338 RUM and the .375 RUM(just these two calibers please) in their 2004 line of rifles as I would like to know too.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

I have a Savage 111G in 300 RUM.  It's nice, but feeding isn't great.  Feels great, and kick is bearable.

VSSF,

Thank you for the post.  Lets take them in the order you posted.

1.]  Winchester M70 Custom Safari Express.  Cost $3,043.  I will just bet that Winchester is selling thousands of these everyday.
2.]  Winchester M70 Custom Ultimate Classic.  Cost $2,941.  Again another hugh seller for Winchester.

This ends the offerings from Winchester for the .338 RUM and the .375 RUM.  Savage and Browning have quit making rifles for the .338 RUM and the .375 RUM.

Your next three are all used rifles not 2004 models.  The last six are what Remington is down to from the larger number of models they offered just last year.  Like I said sales ARE down and companies are dropping the RUM line of cartridges.  Truce!  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

About 6 months ago I picked up a Rem 700 .338 RUM in CDL grade.  High quality wood, engraving everywhere.  Store owner said it had been sitting there since the .338 RUM came out, and decided to sell it to me for $600 just to move it out.

I bought it.  It shoots inside 3/4 inch, and plan to never get rid of it.  Its the only magnum I really own.

I handload so don't worry about commercial ammo.  I bought 300 rounds of brass, and I figure I've got enough.  I have plenty of .338 caliber bullets because I also use the .338/06.  Plan to use it hunting this year.

Is a deer or elk going to know the difference between a 300 RUM or a 300 Win. mag. I don't think so and most shooter can not shoot good hunting groups at 500 yards anyway. Another point to ponder is a guy with a Ultra Mag is still going to use a range finder at really long range just like a guy with a regular magnum is going to do. I can not see them being any great improvement over the magnums we had for years.----Just my humble opinion.
