"Scout " knife can openers

Since the situation presented itself this
week,  I decided to alternate trying out
some of the can opener "blades " on
some of the different scout type knives
I have at hand
Short version-  the Buck/Wenger SAK
won hands down as far as ease of use
doing the designated job
Surprise- the Victorinox Farmer was a
distant second
The 60's (?) Camp King and the USGI
Camillus tied
We all know how the P38 and P51 do.
They're just slightly better than nothing.
Their virtue is compactness and being
handy in the pocket when needed since
you're likely to have it

Actually the p 38 and 51 are much better than nothing and with enough use you get good with them...

I use to keep P38's in my pockets and if someone needed one, I'd just give them one. They do poke holes in you pocket tho. They cost a lot more now than they did then.

all you need is a flat rock and its faster then the GI opener

tip the can upside down  so the top is on the rock then with some pressure rub the top rim on the rock. it will grind the metal enough so that it will separate from the can. nice thing to if you dont eat it all you can put the lid back on. dont put it in a pack though or somewhere it will tip over because the lid doest reseal it guarantee i can open two cans like that before you get your first open with a p38

Doesn't sound like it to me, I got pretty good with a P-38, heck even the wife used one for a while when I was but a private.

Since I didn't include a P38/P51, I thought I
would use one today and add it here

Still the same IMO
Not as good as something with
a longer handle with leverage
Is a P51 handy?  You bet
Will you likely have one on you
when you need it?  Definitely
Is a P51 a great ferro rod/ Doans bar
striker?  Very much so
Is a P38/P51 superior to a longer
handled opener?  Not at all

It's handiness and the likelihood that
you'll have it when you need it and the
low cost are it's virtues

Had to use one the other day. Wall mounted opener crapped out, hand held broke after a few days. Not as good as I once was (out of practice) but it worked fine and even let the kids give it a twist.
