Hi y'all.
I've just been looking at a Winchester "compact". It's just the sort of thing I want and it appears well made. However I've been reading so much negative stuff about Winchesters that I'm not sure about it. Has Winchester lifted it's standards recently? Are their exported guns of better quality than the ones for the domestic market? Like I say, it looks good, and so it should for $1500!
The other gun I am thinking of is the Remington mod 7. I've only seen a pic. of this one...I just might be able to live with the laminated stock (yuk) If it was a a lot better rifle
As for the caliber, I'm thinking of .308 and loading it to 30-30 figures so it don't boot too much. I might even go with a 7-08 yet... the first thing I want to work out is wich rifle.

Gaz: You will find several posts in the positive for the model 7 in 7mm08 on this forum, it seems to be the favorite of the people around here, I have one and I think the wirld of it. good luck in your decision.

Just another option to think about is the Remington model 700 youth.

I saw an ad where Rugar has a compact and I like Rugar quality but I have never saw one of their short rifles.

Hi i had a Rem Model 7 in a 22 250 in the kind of stock you are talking about and i like it the gun was ss and i had a trigger job done on it and it was a good shooter i would go with a Rem before i would the Ruger or Win compact rifles i think JHM has one in a 7mm-08 VM

it sounds like the Rem 7 might be best. I used to have a Ruger with a plastic stock, but I like wood better... but thats just my preference.
In this particular rifle, do you think 7-08 would boot much less than .308?
I would have thought a .260 Rem would be well suited to this rifle but it seems not to be chambered in this cal.

If you are starting a kid off you can soft reload either the 7mm08 or the 308. That's what I did and after 8 years we are still not up to max loads. Our shooting is less then 200yd so no reason to waste the powder.

You have a bigger selection of points with the 7mm and 308. Everything from 100 to 175 to 250s

Remington makes the Model 7 in .260 with SS in a synthetic stock. They used to make with a blued barrel in a laminate stock (I have one) so you might be able to find a used one kicking around out there. I love mine, shoots great. You will probably want to get a trigger job done though.

Overall Remington is a good choice but according to their website, there were some problems with the Model 7 that made it subject to a warning and possible recall. I'm not sure what it was all about. It might be worth a check for yourself. I'm sure by this time it may all be ironed out.
