I bought one a few years ago in .30-06. My opnion, get the gun alone, without scope. It's only about $30-$50 cheaper, but that's more money to put towards a quality scope and rings and mounts.

The .308 would be cheaper to shoot if you don't reload and it's basically the same shell.

Other than that, I don't care for Stainless Steel for hunting, I think it's too bright.

Your choice in Savage is a good one I believe.  There is no other make that is more accurate out of the box.  They have the Accu-Trigger and they also free float and glasss bed at the factory.

But I agree with opting out of the cheap scopes and mounts they package.

Everyone I know who has a recent Savage raves about how it shoots.  The .223's are winning competitions out of the box.

I had one (116) in 270 Win. a few years back and liked it.  If you are going to get a new scope anyhow I'd opt for the gun only as it's about $60 bucks cheaper last I checked.  If you weren't planning on adding a nicer scope or not planning on adding one soon then go for the package.

The Savage rifles are great, not as pretty as some of the others but pretty don't kill deer.  You won't be disappointed with Savage accuracy in my experience.

The cartridge choice is pretty subjective, sure the 308 is cheaper to shoot but it also has more (not really much more) recoil.  Get what you want there, both will do the job on most game.  Cheap target ammo would be nice though.....

I have hunted with a Savage 116U for several years now. Its a beautiful rifle and very accurate. I can get .75 inch groups with it. I got the .30-06 model. I have been looking at a Remington 700 but can't come up with a good reason to replace my savage.
