Savage Model 170

How common is the Model 170 ?

What calibers did they make it in ?

I saw a guy on a website who was looking for a Model 170 in .35 Rem.  I wasn't aware they made it in any other caliber than .30-30.

They came in both .30-30 and .35 Rem. and in rifle and carbine bbl's.  I have a rifle in .30-30 and Nikon 1.5-5 scope. It has been very accurate, producing 1.5" groups off the bench with reloads using the 170gr flat nose bullet. I took two deer at 80 yds this past season with it.

I also have a 170 in 30-30 with the longer barrel (non-c).  Very accurate.  With a fixed 4x cheap BSA scope it will group 3/4" at 100yds using the 150gr American Eagle ammo.  I've not seen the 35rem but it's out there somewhere.

In my opinion, based on seeing the Savage 170 shot at target ranges over the years, they were an excellent buy. They were significantly less expensive than the Remington 760. In the 1970s they could be had new for about 2/3 the cost of the Remington 760. I remember this because a friend of mine almost bought one in the early 70s as a companion firearm for his Remington 870 shotgun. He was a shotgunner first and foremost. He bought the Remington 760 because of its direct relationship to the 870. I have never hunted with anyone using one, nor have any shooting buddies had a 170 in their collection. During the 1999 season, I saw a hunter with a Savage 170 in Pillsbury State Forest near Brainerd.
When were these rifles last offered?
Popgun,
I hunt in MN in the Rum River area. Where are you hunting? I use a Remington 7400, as the brush is very close there.

I believe the manufacture run on these were '70-'81.  My dad bought this one for about 100.00 back in '70 for whitetails.  It was the rifle I carried my first opener at 14.  Never shot a thing with it, always intimidated me probably due to my distaste for recoil and it just didnt fit me (I was small).  Fast forward 30yrs, my dad passes away and I got rifle in my case, finally got big enough to love the challenge of recoil (fave is the guide gun 45-70).....and did put the gun back in the field this year so a friend could have an extra.

The 170 is slowly fading into obscurity but still can be found here and there burning in the hearts of those that love them.  I know a fella that hunts with one as a backup swamp gun....he has the "c" carbine model.  He bought his new circa '74 for 75clams!

I had a 30-30 and then sold it to a friend. he wound up chopping the stock and scrwed it all up. Should have kept it, but I didn't. My dad still has his that he bought for $100.00 from Coast to Coast. I carried it my first year. They are a good rifle, but on most I have seen, the foreend rattles badly.
