im a hypocrite
« on: August 30, 2022, 09:45:11 PM »
always preached against cell phones. I think they are part of the downfall of this country but i have to admit i now have one. My wife got it for me for my birthday. Its set up to ring only when my home phone rings so when im away i dont miss important calls. That and she bought me one of those fancy game cameras that sends pictures to it from my deer blind. I still feel like a traitor though. I have to admit her reasoning made sense. Im in the woods in my jeep, side by side and 4 wheeler all the time and my injurys have gotten so bad lately that theres no way if i broke down or something happened i could walk out anymore if its anymore then a 1/2 a mile and id probably struggle at that. I had to shake my head though. She gave it to me two days ago and yesterday i was sitting around and fired the tv up and looked for a movie. What did if find. Some movie about china invading the US and using some back door program in there cell phone computer chips to track the movement of everyone that didnt comply.

I see people of ALL ages absolutely obsessed with cell phones. I use mine for the weather radar screen mostly, although I do enjoy texting. I do not use mine when driving.

Well happy birthday Lloyd. I use my cell phone as a computer more than a phone. They already know all about us so I don't think about it much.

i swear to greybeard reloaded that i will never sent even one text ever. If you want to talk to me call me and actually talk. As to using it as a computer. I doubt ill do much of that either. Much easier to see stuff on my laptop. My wife tried to show me how to do the internet on it and just left me more confused. It will no doubt do what my old flip phone did years ago. Sit on the counter unless i have to go somewhere like i mentioned in the woods or im expecting a call on my land line. She on the other hand should have one of those beer hat things with the phone dangling in front of her face all day. She even has some watch dohicky she can get texts on when God forbid her phone isnt in her hand.

No need to preclude modern technology from EVER occurring, which might actually get you out of a jamb, or be time saving and helpful, regardless of your strong words in the past when you didn't have it in hand.  You have it.  Use it!  It won't bite. We won't think better - or worse - of you (some will, but I won't). You have broad shoulders.  You can take a few "hits".  And they are only "hits" if you GAD about the Messenger.

BTW, welcome to the 21st Century.

I for one won't hold you to that one.  Texts actually go through a different part of the network, so when you have little to no signal, a text can go through.  In my household I have a rule, if it takes more than two/three texts, call me.  And don't add me to any group texts when it's just chit-chat.

The cellphone is certainly a very useful devise. If someone is addicted to sitting staring at one all day or having it constantly stuck to their ear it isn't the phone's fault, it's the user's. And addiction is the addict's fault be it phones, pain killers alcohol, whatever, not the item of the addiction. The phone is simply a tool just like a hammer, saw, vehicle, firearm, etc. and can do nothing without a human to operate it or consume it. Put the blame where it belongs, on the user.

I don't own a smart phone and likely never will again. Matt bought me one and I wasn't smart enough to even figure out how to turn it on and off much less use it. That one didn't last long here. Matt took it back and now my 3 year old grand daughter uses it I think.

He got me a dumb phone, a flip phone that only takes and makes calls. Even with it I have a hard time figuring out how to make a call with it other than when in my truck where I just have to push a button on the steering wheel and then select the person I want to call from the list he set up for me. I honestly can't say if I'd be able to figure out how to dial a number from it or not, probably not.

I am seriously technology challenged and cell phones are out there way above my tech savvy level.

Besides I can't see squat up close so couldn't see the silly screen even if I knew how to make a smart phone work.

My only reason to have a phone is in case I'm out and have an emergency. With my health issues that is a strong possibility. I drive a nearly new vehicle with less than 14,000 miles on it at present so I'm not too concerned about it causing me problems.

I do use it to call my wife to let her know when I'm leaving the store 3.25 miles away so she can send our youngest son Phil out to bring the stuff in I bought.

Both houses land line only: North house has an answering machine; South house has two dial phones.
If one wants to talk to me call and let it ring down South, or leave a message up North.

If car breaks down I can walk for help; at this point in life I no longer travel in truly nastly weather in winter and still have stuff in the car for an emergency.

a man after my own heart. Ive been fooling with this thing for a few days and its a lesson in frustration. Nothing works the same way as my laptop. Everything i try to do on it i have to ask the wife how and I could never imagine getting good enough on it to do anymore then buy something off of ebay and even then it takes three times as long because you one see about one thing at a time on it. Ill take the big screen on my computer anyday over that tiny little screen. Trying to type on it is another frustrating thing. Ive got huge hands and club fingers and im allways hitting the wrong key. What i can do is answer the phone, look at the pics from my game camera and check my bank account and check out the news and thats the end of my education on it. The rest ill do like i always did right here on the computer. Heck it would probably take me 5 minutes to make this post on that thing. Then my wife told me what this (censored word) phone cost!! Aint NO WAY id pay that much to be able to do what i do on it. We have separate budgets and she bought it and pays the monthly fee. Personally i wouldnt have paid more then a 100 bucks for it. Thats good money i could have bought a new gun or some tools with.  I got this as a birthday present from the wife along with the game camera. My daughters bought me a dewalt battery band saw and a dewalt battery grease gun. Ask me which of the three would go in the garbage if i was forced to choose.

Well, since you have one, check these apps out in your app store either Google Play or the Apple App Store :

These are free, some with some advanced pay features (no ads etc)

Michigan DNR Hunt Fish - Harvest reporting, Licenses etc. (most all states have an app)
Strelok+ - Ballistic Software, long range
BallisticsARC - Ballistic Software, long range
HuntStand - Mapping and other hunt related tasks
Splits - Shot Timer
PractiScore - IPSC/USPSA Scoring
Reloading Calculator - As the name implies
Reloading Cost Calculator - As the name implies
Reloading Log - Keeps your reloading data

There are a whole bunch more obviously, but these are the ones I have installed, minus the MI app, I have TN and TX.

I'm also a flip phone user. I use it as a phone , and will take a pic with it if the right shot comes happens. That is as far as I'll go with it. I don't text, and I use my laptop to email, surf and watch vids. My Grandson wonders why I don't get with the program. lol! He said, you were a radio repairman in the Army, and worked for radio stations as a DJ for many years. That was pretty high tech stuff. Yep, but that was then, and this is now. My tired old, slow brain works on a different level, if it works at all these days. My memory has slipped so bad, I copy things down, and then forget where I copy them to. It's another world today, and I'm glad to let this younger generation handle things for me.

Everybody in this region pretty much
has one glued to their hand.
I have relatives that live on farcebook
and post everything in their everyday
life that they do. Every move they
make and every thought they have
gets posted on the web. I've asked
if they don't think about the entire
world watching every aspect of their
lives, but they think I'm just the old
idiot relative.
Oh well.  . .  At least nobody knows
when and what I'm eating at any
particular time of day, or when I
go to relieve myself, or if I'm away
for whatever length of time, or if
I bought a hamburger, or I seen a
stray cat dumping it's bowels in
the street, etc.
