This doesn't Look Good....

Was looking over my model 96 tonight and found what appears to be a crack in the slide.  Can't figure out how this area would crack like this...  Anyone ever seen this before?  If it is a defect, how do I go about getting it serviced??

That gun is broken, period.  Call your dealer and have him return it to Beretta for replacement.  DO NOT SHOOT that pistol until it is repaired.

Buddy, I have never seen a slide crack like that before.  The only thing I can think of is that the metal must have had a casting flaw in it.  That happened to me once with a Beretta Model 70S in 380 - the barrel came with casting pits large enough to seat a primer, just over the chamber area.  Beretta told me they magnafluxed each barrel and didn't find the problem before selling it.  I told them that if the flaw had been cast it probably would not have been picked up in the magnafluxing.  They agreed and replaced the barrel.  Same thing could have happened to your slide but whatever you do, get it back to them for replacement.

Beretta will replace that part and probably do it all for free? They are ok to deal with. They make fine firearms from what I've heard.

Hi guys.  I saw your photos and checked my brand new 92.  It has the same notch.  The sides of the notch have the finish of the gun on them and are nice and smooth.  Could this be a part of the design?  I'll be checking my manual and some web sites.  If I find anything, I'll report back.

I just checked my 96, the notch is there as well. It looks like part of the design.

Thanks fellas, thats refreshing news.  I was kinda hoping to get this response.  Had I cleaned it up a little I probably could see that it was machined this way, but dirty it sure looks like a defect.  Can't see what purpose it would serve mechanically .

8)  Hi guys...Don't worry ...I've seen this a lot at my work..It is a problem for sure, but that happens when you fire the gun a lot. Like i said i work on a gun shop/range and see it quite a bit. You can still shoot the gun but my suggestion is the same as the other members, get it to Beretta to get fix..... 8)

I stopped by my local gunshop today and looked at a BRAND NEW Model 92 Elite, it had the exact same slot.  This is by design.

Mine has the same and it has to be by design. Think about it. If it was a crack of that size wouldn't things be "out of square". For a "crack" spread that large something would/should be binding.
Just another worthless opinion!!
