Today, America gets all of it's steel or iron from car junkyards. Cars today have less steel, but cars of old had a lot of steel. So we are not actively mining iron ore. Also, every year they scrap old ships. Lots more steel there.
Aluminum recycling is not what it should be, cans, other scrap aluminum, but not as much. Planes have the most aluminum in them, but a 747 can last 50 years with new or rebuilt engines, so they aren't scrapped as fast as cars and old ships. Also, most aluminum ore has to be mined, melted, slag separated out, etc, to finally get to the scrap aluminum.
As far as the windmill catching on fire, it could have been a lighting strike and caught the gear oil on fire.
