New to me author
« on: May 14, 2022, 04:59:02 AM »
I am still reading books I bought in the last days of Hastings and my latest read was by Jim R Woolard, someone new to me. He writes historical fiction dealing with Ohio in the form of personal memoirs. This one was his third novel titled "Blood At Dawn" and is set in the war of 1791 which was considered the worst defeat of American troops at that time. If anyone enjoys historical fiction I recommend this. It was good enough that I immediately purchased two more of his novels off Amazon. Hard times during war with a love story in the middle of it all.

Jim Woolard, I will have to try remembering that one. Outside the characters, does he stick quite close to "the facts ?

I looked up the war of 17911 after reading this book and it seemed to be accurate. According to the Fantastic Fiction website his first novel "Thunder In The Valley" won the Western Writers of America's Medicine Pipe award for best first novel and also the Spur award for best first paperback novel in 1996. I wouldn't class him quite with Elmer Kelton but he is pretty good at spinning a tale. Of course no one IMO was as good as Kelton including Louis L'Amour. Kelton wrote novels based on Texas history from before the Alamo up until present times and he got things right according to the history I studied in school. I even learned some things from his novels that was never mentioned in school.
