Why Was NATO Created?
« on: May 05, 2022, 04:25:38 PM »
NATO was created in 1949 precisely for what Europe has seen since WWII. And is seeing, and experiencing at the present.

RUSSIAN AGGRESSION!

General George Patton had Russia figured out and so did the rest of Europe.

They saw it coming way back in 1949. A leopard doesn't change his spots.

Patton had the right idea back at the end of World War II. The United States and the rest of Europe had should have gone in and eradicated the Russian government knowing full well of what they would become and had already been. The russia of today is merely an extension of the aggression that Russia is famous for. Russia as a general rule is considered the dog that it is.
They have not changed since 1922, soviet union or not.

Russia has felt land locked and boxxed in since the 1700's.  They fought Sweden (who owned Finland, Estonia and Latvia at the time) and built St. Petersburg on the Baltic to have an outlet to the sea.  Then they fought the Lithuanians, Polish, and Ukrainians to acquire more territory.  Then the fought the Turks for outlets to the sea along the northern Black Sea coast.  They went east to acquire Siberia, and south into central Asia.  They have expanded for over 200-250 years.  They shrank after the fall of Communism in the Soviet Union and all their conquered territories got their independence.  Putin just wants it all back.

Russia refused to remove their troops from eastern and southern Europe after WWII and let their old governments back into power that were there before the NAZI's took them.  Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Czechoslovakia.  Stalin put puppet communist governments there and kept their troops there until they were well established.   We and the Brittish removed our troops almost immediately from Norway, Denmark, France, Italy, Greece, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Italy, and Austria.  We only kept troops in Germany to de-NAZIfy it.  So when Russia refused to let the pre WWII governments return to power, the west formed NATO, which expanded eastward after the fall of the Soviet Union.  The former east block countries absolutely do not want to go back under Russia's thumb.

DD is of course, correct. Russia has only one year round port of it's own..and that is Murmansk.

My eldest brother was 16 when he entered into WW2.  He served in the Merchant Marines.  During WW2, the USA sent millions of tons of "Lend Lease" military goods to Russia, by way of the Port of Murmansk.
my brother was on the infamous, "suicide run to Murmansk".  To cut the story short..  I believe it was  something like 50 or 60 US merchant ships that formed a lend lease convoy to Murmansk.
British destroyers were to meet them early in the Atlantic, and escort them through to Murmansk.
For some reason, the destroyers never showed...but a German submarine "wolf pack" did !

Many ships did not make it...less got throughthan survived.  The painful part; ..the other ships could not stop to rescue survivors...or they too would have been sunk.

Now,.... Austria, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Bolivia and Paraguay for examples, are  also land locked. ...But I am quite sure DD would also agree that being land locked, is no excuse for a country to attack it's neighbor !
