Cherokee Nation Wants To Give Me Hearing Aids,

Every week or so I receive my copy of the "Cherokee Phenix". I browse through it to see if anybody is in there that I know.
Front page notified all us non reservation dwelling Cherokee that their policy of furnishing us non reservation Cherokee 1 hearing aid and selling us the second at cost had been revised, and The Cherokee Nation would now furnish both hearing aids.

Linda is hopping up and down for me to get the hearing aids. I've never been one on anybody giving me anything I didn't earn myself.
AND, if I took them, would I loose my piece and quite?

LOL, I've been thinking about getting some, but have put it off. Shouldn't have mentioned that the Nation would give'em to me.
I've always had a problem with taking stuff like that when I'm capable of paying my own way.

I find "I didn't hear you" to be a very good excuse.  Considering the amount of problems that everyone I have ever known that had hearing aids had or are having with them I have shied away from them. My son has them courtesy of the VA. He wore them for a time and put them away. Said they were more trouble than they were worth. I do use Sennhizer wireless headphones to listen to TV and keep peace in the family as my wife hears much better than I do. Loud enough for me is too loud for her and just right for her causes me to miss about half or more of what is said. I guess if I couldn't hear at all I would get hearing aids, until then it's NO.

I made the mistake of getting hearing aids. Helped a little, but get tangled in everything, pick up lots of extranious noise, interfere with my glasses, and make it harder to tell where sounds are coming from. AND when wearing a mask it's almost impossible to get it off without the hearing aids ending up on the floor. But I do like the things I got to hear the TV with where I hear background noises that give nuance to the story and I don't drive the wife out. I have almost not worn them the last two years.

You don't know what you're missing, until you know what you're missing. I've been wearing hearing aids for almost 20 years. Yes, there is a hassle factor, and some aids are better than others, but I think I would be alone in a room full of people if I didn't have hearing aids. Most likely, the people around you are being very nice about living with your hearing loss, repeated questions, loud TV, trying to call you on the phone, all of that stuff is important. I would take the free aids, (my last pair were $5000+) and work with an audiologist to get them set up correctly.

I can get the free through the VA but havent yet. I do have hearing loss but my main problem is ringing in my ears from many years of shooting. The ear doc said that these new hearing aids can cancel out that ringing.

  They sure help, Lloyd !  I'm due to be fitted for new ones on May 6.  They say the new ones don't need battery replacement.  Th eones I have, when using the gold batteries..charge every night..last maybe a year or 1.5 years..the new ones are supposed to last indefinitely, with nightly charging.

My wife has a bad habit of looing away when talking to me from a distance and is especially bad about looking out her window when we are in the car and telling me something. Between her looking the other way and road noise I usually have no clue what she is saying. Even though I explain frequently that I can't understand her when she does this she won't quit. Then I get growled at when I don't answer her. Background noise is my hearing killer. Road noise, loud crowds, loud sound effects in movies and on TV and I am clueless about what is being said.

 Age affected my eyes not my hearing. I have the curse of being far sighted. And the goofy looking glasses. That’s why i use contacts, and they work. But i hear everything just fine. No problems there, yet but you never know.

Understand Gene, but for the money I am going to give it a try. My former sharecropper got his aids through COSTCO along with a couple people from church and they seem quite satisfied with them. Much of what I have read says that you need to give it at least a year for your brain to adjust.

  My problem was some small general hearing loss..butth emain problem, was sorting out High pitch from t e general sounds.

  For instance, especially with TV or radio, but in almost any setting, I hveplenty of bass hearing , but very little treble hearing.  My factory 'ears', sort that out !

The only negatives so far are that I never had any idea how noisy my feet are when walking and I can get a motorcycle helmet on fine but when taking it off the aids come with it. My wife is loving it. She says she has had two days of me not asking for repeats of what she has said and the TV volume is much lower. In the PU I can hear the radio much better but there is almost no increase in background road noise. Very happy with them at this point.
