Well, darn, just darn
« on: April 02, 2022, 09:51:41 AM »
Tumble weeds have been a major annoyance this year. A gg daughter helped me and we cleaned out the fence along the north side of my house and threw them out into the pasture. I then gave them a bush hog massage and this particular bunch won't tumble anywhere anymore. They just kind of disappeared after being run over by the hog.

Since the tractor was all warmed up I decided to hog some of the pasture down while I was fired up and proceeded to do so. I made a mistake though. I ran over a huge bear grass and thought I would clear it enough by raising the hog but it grabbed it. It ripped it right out of the ground but also knocked a blade out of alignment and that's it until I can align the blades again. The hog and the tractor shake like crazy when this happens. It's a major chore to do. I have to jack the deck up enough to get under it to work and it is easier to just use a high lift jack rather than to reset the lift to where the tractor can raise it and then re-level the deck again when done. First thing though is to loosen the nut on the blades which is no small chore as they are tightened to 350 FPT. My method is a breaker bar and a 10' cheater pipe. I tighten it the same way and yank on it until it won't move any more, to heck with a torque wrench. Any less and it will slip too easy. I learned that the hard way. It used to take me about an hour and a half to get everything lifted, blocked up, nuts loosened, the blades aligned and clamped where they can't move while tightening, and then put everything up. I haven't had to do this for three years and it may take a half day to do it this time or even more. I don't get up and down or crawl under stuff very well anymore. Maybe I can scare up a big, stout grandson to help tomorrow afternoon but I'm not counting on it.

oldandslow. That’s gota be aggravating. Your bushhog is different? Used to blades that freely rotate and balance via centrifugal. Saves gear boxes and stuff when they hit something.

Please be careful working under a high lift jack! I won’t work under anything with less then jack stands.

True! Hi-Lift jacks are handy, and deadly.

The jack is only used to get it high enough to block it up where it can't fall while I am working on it. I may be old and slow but not no so slow as to work under anything with only a jack as support. That is any kind of jack, not just a high lift. The high lift is a dangerous piece of equipment if not used right but a very handy one as long as you know what will get you in trouble using one. I carried one on my welding rig for years and it came in very handy in certain instances.

In answer to your question this is a real bushhog. That is the brand name on the side, "Bush Hog". It is a small one and the cutter blades are bolted firmly to a bar which has a stump jumper thingy mounted in the middle. Bear grass isn't stiff enough to make it ride over it. The hog has a slip clutch to protect the gear box. I have a very old one that rides on it's own wheels and can be adjusted for height that I like better because it doesn't mind cutting bear grass but my current tractor isn't large enough to run the blade. I have tried to give it away but no one I know wants to use an old fashioned pull type anymore.

Thanks oldandslow. Muking with tight blades isn’t fun. Your 2nd mower sounds like a finish mower.

Can relate to the good feelings while demoing stuff with a bush hog. :)

I feel your pain, try working on a Nissan Frontier 4.0. Especially the oil filter location which is a common compliant.
Some guys just remove the bumper and the  skid plate to get access. But i figured out going in through the wheel well, which still isn’t easy.

Not a finish mower. Big, heavy, rascal that rides on 15" tires and will cut anything on my place, grass, bear grass (soapweed yucca), catclaw, and small mesquite bushes. My little Kubota doesn't have the grunt to pull it and swing it's very heavy blade at the same time. I used it for a time with a CA Allis-Chalmers and later a friend would loan me his 4 row John Deer tractor. The Allis no longer runs, can't even get tires to fit it now, and the friend has passed on and his kids sold his tractor so the hog just sits there rusting.
