Favorite rimfire action.
« on: April 01, 2022, 05:37:07 PM »
Now days most of my shooting is with rimfire rifles.  I don't hunt much big game anymore..don't figure a deer is worth the effort to process.  ..And let's face it, for many of us, big game season is only for 2-3 weeks of the year anyway.

So, most of my hunting and shooting is with rimfires.  I have several in .22 LR, one in .22 Mag and one in .17 HMR.
I just got to wondering, what is the favorite action in each cartridge..  What is your favorite action in each?

A really good question. I'd have to say that the Remington Rolling Block is my favorite with any cartridge including rim fires. After that would be a break action. However, in terms of safety of operation it would be the Number 6 Improved Remington (falling block).

The 22 I have that's shot the most by far is, my Henry lever!  It easily wins that contest, but the 22 that I own that I love the most is my ULA,

Melvin sure builds a fine rifle!

I have always liked th ebolt actions, but I have nothing against the single shots..and still have an NEF Versa...along with an old, like new.. Winchester 67 single shot bolt..with a 27" barrel..good for shots at pests...and not disturb nearby neighbors
Since semi=autos have come so far, I have had 3 different 10/22s..but now have truly learned to like  very much, my Thompson Center TCR22..  Compare both in stock form...the TCR has many upgrades.

My 22 mag is a Savage 93, as is my present .17HMR...both shoot like a Savage normally does..great !

I swapped my Savage 64f for my TCR22..  That Savage auto was a very good shooter..but those
     $#*^&@ magazines..

I purchased a beautiful, deeply grained, inlaid walnut panel (not shown), stainless, bolt action, Ruger K77/22PR with its 10 round "revolving" magazine, AND 6X Weaver Classic scope (not shown) that shoots the least and the best ammunition (regardless) to 1/4 moa at 65 yards.  I have killed MANY pigs with that rifle, within 25 yards, from a rock steady rest, each one shot in the "X" between ears and eyes.  GREAT "meat getter" rifle.

I own, but don't often shoot, a semi-auto, Mannlicher stocked, Mossberg, Model 151M-B, with its tube fed magazine.  It has a feeding issue, which I have yet to diagnose and fix.

Still shooting my 1958 Marlin Golden 39A in the rifle category, and my Browning Buckmark in pistol.

Except for my fist year production 10/22, I was for many years, a Marlin man, because of accuracy considerations.....  Then Marlin was sold out..so I moved to Savage, having heard good things concerning
 their accuracy.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Savages.I had a couple Savage/Anschutz 22 mags, back in the 70s, and of course they were accurate, simply because they were actually fully Anschutz.

I had given them to a son & grandson, and got a Marlin 782 .22 mag..just didn't cut it, accuracy wise..
Tried out other brands without success.
I about wrote off another .22 Mag..then I was at my friend Mark's LGS..and he had a special on base model 93 Savage mags..price so good, I took another fling at a Mag.

  Glad I did..thiis one shoots alongside the Anschutz mags I had.  Best 40 grain...CCI Maxi Mags..best accuracy overall..Hornady 30 gr..V-max..

For anything besides serious target shooting, the 39A by far. All steel and walnut. Prefer the long barrel. Feels right.

Older ones like Dee’s 1958 are bigly collectible.

Grew up with a Remington model 33 single shot bolt rifle and they're still my favorite.

Here's another action style that I like VERY much,

This T-bolt is Brownings Belgium made model, and it's a LOT nicer than the one they sell today, especially in LH.!

That T-bolt looks right with a receiver sight on it.
And yes the Belgians are nicer and I read somewhere that the Jap models have trouble with the metal rusting from salt in the stocks.
If I was on my laptop I’d look it up and link it.

I had a Stevens Favorite for a short time
before I let someone pile up money in
front of me and let it go away.
Probably didn't weigh much more than
a couple of boxes of ammunition.
Now I've got a 10/22 I bought in the
1980's that is a tack driver and a
target MKIII and a target Contender
barrel
I'd like to have one of the Henry levers.
I handled one a friend bought and
out of the box it was as smooth as
his old Marlins. Don't know how it's
built, but it felt like it had teflon
bearing surfaces inside.
He said it was a top drawer shooter.

When you get around to looking it up I think you'll find the issue with the salt wood stocks was with Belgian made not Jap made Brownings.

I dunno that I have a favorite action as such. I do have a favorite rimfire tho I no longer own it. Sold it to my cousin and still am not sure why other than he had been after me to a long time. Dunno why as he already had a twin to it.

The rifle was a Weatherby Mark XXII with tube magazine rather than clip magazine. One of the most beautiful and also most accurate .22 rifles I've ever seen. Sure wish I'd held onto that one, along with about 50 or so other guns I've let go of over the years.

I gave a Ruger 1022 to one son, and a Marlin auto loader to the other. I kept my 1959 Marlin Golden 39A because it'll shoot shorts, longs, long rifles, or CB Caps and never complains. Even if you mix'em all together. Doesn't hurt that its super accurate either.

Interesting that you should mention that..   A year ago, I cleaned up and oiled a couple Japanesa Arisaka rifles (WW2) that were donated to our legion post.
Before starting the task, I decided to research the situation...and I am glad I did.  Some of those WW2 Arisakas had stocks that were finished with a lacquer derived from some weed there in the islands of Japan.
According to what I read,  some folks who brought such rifles home and later decided to refinish them, got very sick and a few even died.
It seems the dust produced by that lacquer when sanded, was very toxic.  I really didn't plan on refinishing though, just a thorough cleaning and oiling.
Just a warning if somebody does decide to refinish one.

And that not all the guns, even in the same models had salt stocks, so you have to check for it before laying your money down.

As for the current T-bolts, they are different is many ways, and not as nice of a rifle.

Got to handle a Belgian T-Bolt about 1979.  Would love to have one.  A good condition Stevens favorite would be a close second.

Have a 10-22 from the late '70's that is great, even though the trigger could be better.  My first 22 was a Springfield 187-J, a version of the Savage-Stevens 87-187 semi-autos that never gave me any trouble.

When I first got interested in 22's, I knew of several that had Remington single shots, must have been 510's.  Managed to acquire one of those, it needs re-finishing and testing.  I have not fired it yet, hope it will be a keeper.  A single shot fits my needs quite well, except when a semi-auto is needed.

Right now I am having fun tinkering and refinishing old bolt action 22s.. A Winchester 67A and a Stevens 66B "Buckhorn'..may get more.
Nowdays, when a man buys a higher priced gun...slobberingbover the "solid steel and walnut"...

Shucks..those old "farm boy" 22 bolt actions had all that ...and only cost a few bucks..and both mine, bought within th elast couple years, cost at or under $100..

I favor the bolt actions for accuracy.  Favorite is a CZ 452 American.  Five shots inside a half inch at 50 yards when I do my part.

I like the Winchester 1885s enough that I bought them in 17HMR, 22LR and 22WMR. They have all been very accurate out of their respective boxes. With the ammunition availability these days, single shots rule here.
