Bitten by the Bug - now need load data
« on: January 04, 2003, 08:29:36 AM »
Last week I posted a question inquiring which was better for deer - a 308 Encore or a 30-06.  Thanks to all for their comments.

Well, my decision was made for me at this morning's gun show.  Found a .308 without scope right in my price range.  I already have a scope, so it's just what I was looking for.

Now, for load data...

Comments please regarding the best bullet choice (150 or 180), and does anyone have a pet load?  I'm partial to IMR 3031 if that data is available.

Thanks again.....
Jim

I use a Nosler 165 Nosler Balistic Tip over 43gr IMR 4064 and CCI LR primer. With a Leupold 4x at 200 yds, it will stay inside of 2". it is about 2 1/2" high at 100 and still in a kill zone for white-tail. You can go alittle hotter, but it's not necessary as teh NBT performance is awesome   I love my Encore 308. I took a big doe with it this year. Dropped on teh spot at about 70 yds. No bullet recovery. off-side shoulder was broke and destroyed--it happens when you hit bone. Good luck.
The first shot is the best shot, it may be your only shot!  Do it with a single-shot.

GypsmJim,
For the .308 I like 150 grain bullets for all but the larger animals. Here is my favorite load:

WEAPON    Remington 788

CASE
MAKE   Winchester        ( 167gr +/- 1gr )
CALIBER   308
HEAD STAMP   308
TRIM LENGTH   2.015
OVER-ALL LENGTH   2.755

BULLET
MAKE   Sierra
WEIGHT   150gr
TYPE   SPITZER (2130)
DIAMETER   .308
BALLISTIC COEFFICIENT   .387

POWDER
MAKE   Hodgdon
TYPE   H335
CHARGE WEIGHT   45.4
PRIMER   CCI 200 large rifle
WAD   NONE

BALLISTICS
MUZZLE VELOCITY   2682
SIGHT-IN RANGE   100yd’s
GROUP SIZE   .75" at 100yd
EXTREME SPREAD   64.6
STANDARD DEVIATION   19.8

You can load 'em hotter but the accuracy is good enough for any deer. This weapon has a BDC on the scope so I sight it at 100 and use the scale to calculate the hold for range on the rangefinder.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.
