FINALLY Got to The Range Yesterday!
« on: December 02, 2021, 01:05:51 AM »
Well I've already complained about having to join the NRA to join a gun club, but I finally got my 2022 key to the gate.

My son sent me an Eotech last year, and I was able to use a federal facility range I used to teach at to get my 36 yard zero.
However, I didn't have the opportunity to check it out further.
Its bumped around in my pickup all last winter, and this summer, and finally yesterday I went to the range.

First checked my zero at 36 yards. 3/4" group because I threw one, but it should been under 1/2".

At 200yds, and 250yds, the 6" plates were no problem.

I liked my SparcAr, but this Eotech is awesome.

Haven't been at all myself since I'd
taken several rifles to check zero before
season a while back.
Last thing was the Maxi to double check
the hunting loads I came up with for
accuracy,  then flinging one downrange
at the deer a few days ago
I need to get some of these irons out of
the fire and visit and check my 22's and
my 223 for zero with the Vmax loads I
put together. I had to pull quite a few to
scrounge powder for the Maxi loads
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Made it to the range today. Played around with shotgun inserts in my 410s. Learned that they won't fit in my Hercules that I had the chamber extended from 2.5 to 3". Then I worked with my S&W model 63. Still shoots 6-8" high at 25 yds. I haven't figured out what to do to make it shoot lower when the rear sight is at the bottom. Eventually I'll get figured out.

I went to my private shooting range yesterday just at dusk. Shot my SP101 in 327 federal. Just wanted to compare the recoil to my S&W 64 with 38 special+P loads. Then I shot a few 32 H&R mag shells as well. The H&R are very comfortable to shoot but and the 327 federal are manageable. But about all I can tolerate with my progressing peripheral neuropathy and arthritis in my hands.

I've always loved the Smith Model 19, or Model 66 with a 3" or 4" barrel, but my preferred carry round is hot, and my hands won't take the recoil anymore.

I can shoot the hottest of rounds however, in a Smith Model 686 very comfortablely.

I started wearing suspenders years ago, so the extra weight is of no consequence.

I've seen several of those over the years  and and if done right? Sweet!

I have a picture somebody took of me in uniform about 38 years ago when my youngest was a baby.
At the time I was carrying a Smith Model 25-5  4" with ivory micarta grips.
Makes me mad every time I think about letting that pistol go.

MY Model 19 had become very uncomfortable to shoot due to a thumb problem. I tried a couple of different sets of wooden grips without any gain and decided to give it one more chance with the Pachmayer rubber grip. Lo and behold, no more hurting thumb. I can't remember the model but they are the ones with no finger groves and they do a really good job of soaking up recoil. They appear to be the same as those on Drilling Man's gun.

I've had a couple of sets like on Drilling Mans, but I like a round butt in my old age.

This is my EDC with the grips I like.

How about a "K" frame 25/20 Winchester to go with it?
