Variety reports – Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on a set in New Mexico on Thursday, accidentally killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

The incident occurred on the set of “Rust,” an independent feature that was filming at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular production location south of Santa Fe.

Hutchins, 42, was transported by helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she died. Souza, 48, was taken by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office.

The Sheriff’s office said in a statement that Hutchins and Souza “were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer, and actor.”

In March 2018, the bad, anti-gun actor played Trump in a bad SNL skit. He mocked Trump on his defense of the Second Amendment as part of his skit.


There’s nothing funny about the tragic death of an innocent 42-year-old woman, but there is something very ironic about the anti-gun Baldwin pulling the trigger. Guns have been glorified in movies for decades while Hollywood celebrities who make a fortune on movies where guns are used, call for gun control.

   One thing we always stressed to troops going on an FTX (field training exercise), is the ability for blank rounds to be deadly   

  In order to make the loud noise it does, a blank must have the mouth of the cartridge blocked with wadding.
  In some rounds, that wadding at very close range can drive right through trhe human skull.

      I believe that a well known actor died a few years ago when he 'playfully' placed a 44 mag loaded with
       blanks, to his temple, and fired.
   
     Of course, antis are notorious for their lack of knowledge, concerning guns..evidently  Baldwin being
      no exception.

No facts available yet except one dead and one wounded that has been released from the Santa Fe hospital and Baldwin fired the shot. It was a dumb stunt on someone's part for sure but we will have to wait and see who takes the blame. I'm guessing the armorer will.

Agreed. Having loaded many blank pistol rounds for training, we usually topped them with a thin piece of cardboard, then sealed them with a thin layer of canning parifin. They were kept separate, and in a refrigerator to prevent the paraffin from contaminating the powder charge.
While at very close range they could sting you, or even blind you, the chances of killing were almost non existent unless the muzzle was in contact with a vital area.
Modern military blanks that will cycle the action with the restrictor on the muzzle proved pretty safe.

I would always have extra cleaning rod pieces to use in the field, they make a great projectile with a blank, taking off the blank adapter of course.

These incidents have always confused me, why use real guns in movies when there are realistic prop guns that are incapable of actually shooting live ammo?  Who brought, and loaded, live ammo into the prop gun?  This was no accident, this was negligent homicide.

Actually it wasn't the same. A 44 magnum was loaded with live rounds. They unloaded the pistol, but a bullet had  came out of a cartridge and lodged in the barrel.
The gun was RELOADED with blanks, and the first blank up drove the bullet down the barrel.
When the live rounds were taken out of the 44, the knucklehead that unloaded it, didnt notice a bullet had come out of one of the 6 rounds.

We're talking about Hollywood types. They're smarter than us.
When someone wants to show me a gun, I watch them unload it. Then I check it again.
If they don't, I unload it, or check it.

When they said Baldwin killed one, and wounded another, I thought. That's quite a blank cartridge. Did the gun blow up.
I made my living with guns, and trained others to do the same.
I knew there had to be more to it.
And there was.

I would note that the news feeds are saying that there had already been two or three cases of "misfires" of prop guns on the set AND no safety meetings or investigation. Very poorly run setup if you ask me.

Some people get hung up on the description of "prop gun". A "prop gun" can be anything from plastic replicas, to metal replicas, to actual unmodified firearms.
Props are used for illustrating events, or in classrooms, and can be fake, or real.
The problem with most Hollywood pretenders is, they seldom know the difference, and their fawning fans cause them to believe their own BS.

Alec Baldwin is one of the worst. Now he knows his BS is all BS. Unfortunately his entourage now knows hes all BS, and one person is dead because of it.
All the screaming hes done over the years concerning outlawing guns, this movie hes making involved guns.
Instead of educating himself on guns, he condemned us.

Alec Baldwin should at the bare minimum be charged with "man slaughter".

Straight from channel 13 news in Albuqurque: It was a real gun and it was a live round. The assistant armorer that wasn't ' working the day of the accident said there should have been no live rounds on the set, period. No word was mentioned of the main armorer. Was this just stupidity or intentional?

My understanding of this movie is, it's a western. Checking the cylinder is a little less precise on a single action Colt style revolver than say a Smith double action.
Turning the cylinder while looking into the loading gate, a person needs to pay attention. If distracted, one could easily turn past a loaded chamber.
Bottom line is, if somebody hands you a real pistol, or you pick one up, check it yourself to see if its loaded.
Killing that producer is on Alec Baldwin. He should have checked it to see if it was loaded.
If it was a single action, hes most likely the one to pull the hammer back, and he is the one that pulled the trigger.
