What are you reading?
« on: July 07, 2021, 11:53:23 AM »
I love sci-fi and read a great deal of it. I just finished the first book in W. MIchael Gear's "Donovan" series. I'm hooked. Gear has written westerns, sci-fi, and early man novels and is an excellent tail spinner. I have read a number of his novels and every one was great.

Just finished "Soldier Stories" a collection of stories from reader's digest, written by veterans after their experiences.

Presently reading "Roll Me Over"..an infantryman's experiences from Normandy to Czechoslovakia.

May read something by Brian Kilmeade next..

Those in addition too reading a chapter from the Bible each night and studying same regularly.

  ..Very rarely read fiction..

I'm part-way through the Galaxy's Edge series/universe by Nick Cole and his co-writer Jason Anspach.  From a fan wiki:
Quote
The Galaxy's Edge Universe is established by the nine book series of the same name, and follows the Galaxy's spiral into chaos at the hands of Galactic Republic officials and an enigmatic, would-be emperor with a dark power from beyond the Edge, intent on saving a corrupt galaxy-spanning civilization from itself.

The Galaxy's Edge universe also includes four spin-off series, Tyrus Rechs: Contracts and Terminations, Order of the Centurion, Nomad, Savage Wars, and Dark Operator. Galaxy's Edge also boasts multiple stand-alone novels and short stories including Tin Man, Imperator, and Takeover, Part 1.

Just finished reading Frank's "Alas Babylon" for the second time. First time was many years ago.

In many respect they had it easy. Not much need for fuel for heating, artesion water, river for fish and flushing toliets.

Given a no power situation, heat and water are likely to be the hard ones for most people.

I read fiction if it has a historical base, and hold fairly true to the story, so I did read Cornwell's "The Fort"..

When I went for others by Cornwell..the various Vikings etc, and the Sharp's series..just didn't hit me the same way.

Read through "Alas Babylon' years ago...  things that may have worked for himin 1959 (year of puvlication) may not work well today.

"One Second After", by William R Forstchen..would apply better to a current attack/survivalist scene today.  It plays out an EMP attack scenario, by a college professor in western North Carolina. .

Since I made my original post I have read Elmore Leonard's "Escape From Five Shadows" and am half way thru "City Of Death" by Ephriam Mattos that tells the true story of him becoming a Seal and then resigning to become a Free Burma Ranger to do humanatarian work and his time working on the front lines against Isis. As soon as I finish with this I'm going back to resding the rest of the "Donavan" series.

You can't go wrong with Elmer. Absolutely the best ever spinner of western yarns ever. I have read everyone of his novels I have been able to find. IMO "Stand Proud" and "The Man Who Rode Midnight" are his best although set in quite different time frames.
