  Thanks Ulav8r;
   I think that was some of the constructive info the deacon was looking for.

I will be installing a walk in shower in the next week or two using Kerdi membrane and pan system for the first time.  The foam pan has the proper slope built in as a base for tile..  I have done just a little tiling before, including two walk ins, 3 or 4 tub surrounds and 3 to 4 hundred sq ft of floor, and one repair to a walk in that had a tiled seat that leaked.  The seat was formed over an osb base.  As water soaked through the grout lines, the osb swelled and the grout lines cracked.  When I removed the seat, there was water standing under it and soaking under the wall.  What a mess.

Getting a concrete pan properly sloped and smooth is a b******.  Hopefully the Kerdi system will make it much easier.  Also, the membrane is supposed to make it fully waterproof.
Kerdi is a newer product. That does not mean it is not good. I suggest you search TileCoach Kerdi failure around drain. If he uses Kerdi he takes some extra steps. Just sayin. Good luck on your shower project and yes mortar beds are a pita.

At my age I am thinking of removing my bath tub and installing a walk in shower. I was looking on Lowe's web site and they have shower pans that look like I can just remove the tub and replace it with a fiberglass pan of the same size. even the drain is in the right place. Install backer board up to the old tile and tile from pan up to the old tile. I have set hundreds of feet of tile and I still have all my cutters saws etc. Main thing was wondering about the quality of pan and if any of you ever installed one?

Deaconllb
When you put your new backer board in. Silicone where it meets the old board. I like denshield it is fiberglass based and is waterproofed on the gray side and a vapor barrier on the yellow. Tile the gray side. It cuts like drywall and easy to work with. Durock has there line of it also but have not used it. Also leave an expansion joint at the corners. Try not to get any mortar or grout in there and silicone it also. On a side note. If your old tile is attached to dry wall, Now would be a good time to demo it out and put in a surround...

Just checked craigslist and there were several used or refurbished walk in tubs between $500, $750, $900 and up. If ya know a reasonable plumber ya might be able to get one on the cheap. They usually come with grab bars, a seat and a hand held shower head along with bath faucet... Maybe ya could ask around at your church for a plumber or such...

There's groups and organizations here
that will do things like that at low or
no cost.  I would imagine there's a
similar group or organization in every
area that will do the same.

My sitters bathroom floor was shot. Not just the floor but the framing underneath had been hacked by a (plumber)? I reinforced the hacked up framing and dropped in a piece of 3/4” plywood and called my bargain plumber in to reset the toidy so she would not fall through to the basement. All at no charge. Ya can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip. She pays her way as far as I’m concerned...

Deacon. I saw a bathtub install where you can buy a kit. Ya make a cut out in your tub and install a door making it a walk in tub. If your interested I’ll try and get the info for ya. Kits were 3 or 400 depending on which style you wanted. Looked like anyone with reasonable skills could do it...

I am well versed on lay in tile shower pan and they are not for me down the road they start leaking and causing floor damage, if floor is concrete then the leaks begin to cause bottom plate rot. I am beginning to think my best bet may be to remove the glass tub enclose and put in a nice shower curtain. My tub is not very deep and I can better survive a slip and fall than breaking through a glass door.

Deaconllb
Our master bath has a walk in shower with a curtain, but I have suction cup grab bars everywhere and a set that we take with us when traveling.    I highly recommend them.
